Been saying it all year. The way that global leaders have totally failed to target over 75s with the lockdown, sheltered them while not dropping a nuclear bomb on the rest of a perfectly healthy country, will go down as one of the biggest global scandals in history. Why did we not just shelter the vulnerable? Someone give me a remotely good reason. Yes. Those listed as "vulnerable" in the UK amounts to over 20% of the population. By shielding, I presume you mean lock them all up? Yeah, good luck completely shielding 15 million people in the UK and not having the additional health problems and suicides that people are currently pointing out for the non-vulnerable. As has been written here, although many don't live with an over 65, we don't have a figure for how many vulnerable people we live with. So, what do we do? Anyone that DOES live with a vulnerable person, the whole family "shields" or do we get the vulnerable kicked out of their homes? How can those who rely on a vulnerable person for child care, continue to work? If you could guarantee this all and keep the virus at bay and keep everyone safe and happy then its a fantastic idea, but its all a bit 'pie in the sky' I mean really, it all sounds like you want a national leper colony so you can carry on with your life. With respect, that's pro lockdown garbage with a serious lack of common sense. Of course there is going to be the odd exception with child care etc, but that's an easy obstacle to overcome with clear guidance and common sense. So by your absurd logic you're basically saying "instead of just a small proportion of the country being locked up with mental health and suicidal thoughts (of which only 4% contribute to the economy), it's only fair that we ensure the ENTIRE population suffer". As per Paul's note earlier, you do realise over 90% of non vulnerable working people in the UK do not live with the vulnerable. So with that in mind, tell me why we can't shield the vulnerable while ensuring a nuclear bomb doesn't get dropped on the majority of the population? You seem obsessed with the well being of the minority, yet don't give a fuck about the majority and their suffering (which in turn massively affects the minority!!). Its almost like you're suggesting a "we all need to suffer together" mentality. I just cannot quite believe how utterly brainwashed the British population has been and how much trust they have in the media and politicians. You can totally see how oppression starts in these totalitarian states. Think how brainwashed Britain has been in 9 months... Now imagine decade after decade after decade of it - and you end up with an Iran or North Korea. Its genuinely so disturbing how easily sold to people have been. Thank god there are reasoned voices on the radio every day with the likes of Maajid Nawaz (LBC) and Kev O'sullivan (talkradio) because its pretty clear the lamestream media has completely lost its moral perspective. Hard working, decent people who have never commited a crime in their life are being shoved into police vans in the most neanderlithic fashion. What is happening to this country and our great "Liberal" democracy which has been revered around the world for so many years. We will all lose a proportion of our rights off the back of this crisis. Why would anyone support that.

I also am very uncomfortable with the implication that deaths among the old and/or already sick are somehow acceptable. Old and sick people are not disposable. 30,000 were bumped off in care homes as the result of Covid policy. You're telling me that authority gives a fuck about these people? It renders all rhetoric of 'saving granny' as using them simply as a way of maintaining a sense of threat and guilt, and funnelling folk towards the lucrative yet unnecessary vaccine programme. Those shameless Pharmma shills were at it again a few days ago. Of all the nonsensical ideas about this virus narrative, the idea that actually care is the most ludicrous of all. 30,000 people were not bumped off in care homes, You came up with this figure to explain excess deaths and maintain your delusion that the pandemic isn't real. You keep insisting that people should believe your paranoid fantasy that we are living in a world where government, state, politicians, the elite, corporations, billionaires have hoodwinked us into believing there is a pandemic and that people working in care homes are systematically killing off old people as part of some master plan. And you're the one insisting that the government are peddling fear. What you want people to believe is far more terrifying than what is actually happening in the real world. Why do you want people to join you in your nightmare? If there is no vaccination program we will not get back to normal and people will die of a disease for which there finally is a cure. And you are positively encouraging people not to engage. If you succeed in your mission to suck others into your anti-vacc bullshit it will be you who will be responsible for unnecessary deaths in care homes not the government. You're in danger of tipping over from harmless fantasist into dangerous bullshitter - and you're not alone. Is it any wonder the security services are on alert when there are people like yourself who would have others die of a curable disease merely to maintain their belief in some bizarre conspiracy theory? You have the right to choose to die for your cause but you have no right to expect others to die for you - and the security services have every right to stop you in your mission to spread your dangerous lies about a vaccine that WILL save lives.

What part of my 'reality' are you disagreeing with, I said that the over 65's should have the right to look after their grandkids if they want to? I think the difficulty is that even if we wanted to shield all over 65s it’s very difficult because there isn’t the amount of childcare available to do it. In that scenario you have parents being unable to work as they have to be at home looking after their kids. This would affect the economy too (I don’t know to what degree this would compare to current restrictions), plus you may have higher case numbers and hospital admissions due to increased contact in social settings if these reopened. I don’t know what is more desirable. In an ideal world we would shield the elderly, have adequate childcare and keep the economy running. The original tweet is looking at household makeup through a single lens and quoting a statistic to back up letting under 40s get on with it. In practice we know they will have contact with over 65s regardless of whether they live with them or not. That's the whole point ... if in practice, they will have contact with the over 65s regardless and if grandparents are going to look after the grandkids (and they are currently perfectly entitled to) then why destroy the third biggest industry in the country and deny millions of young people the right to jobs in the future? If people over 65 want assistance (be it financial or otherwise) to shield, then it is they that we should be helping to keep out of the way of the virus (not furloughing millions of fit and healthy people), until the vaccine is rolled out. What's happened in the past, is irrelevant now, what is important, is what happens over the next 3 months and us not allowing millions of jobs to go to the wall for no reason. The elderly and the at risk are in contact with people from every walk of life if they want to be, so what are we actually achieving here? Give them the right to choose what they want to do and give the young the right to choose to work. This is a good interview ...

I've just given you a list of reasons why it would be nigh on impossible to "shield" 15 million people in the UK. Take my scenario had we not just contracted the virus. I am 35, pretty fit and healthy although I am vulnerable because I have an auto-immune disease and therefore immunosuppressed however with the right medicine it is like I have no ailment. I would have to shield in your eyes. I have a partner who is not vulnerable and we have a 3 year old and a 7 year old, also both not vulnerable. Do I need to move out, find a new place and separate until god knows when? Does my partner need to tell work she cant go in because she needs to shield with me? Do my children need to sacrifice school until god knows when, so they can shield with me? What about their grandparents that are both in their 70s, whom we rely on for childcare? Cannot see their grandkids until when? As I said, pie in the sky and would simply not work in the real world.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. The biggest inquest of our lifetime is just beginning.

Targeted shielding should be done on age. If you take out over 70s, you are left with a tiny tiny proportion of the country of vulnerable people... Which immediately frees up the health service and frees up the economy, while also restoring civil liberties. Failed attempts to prop up the economy is going to have cost us 700 billion by March - the worst debt in history. Instead of subsidising salaries and hapless floundering attrmpts to postpone recession, and given child care is your big worry (although I personally don't think you should have to shield anyway), why couldn't they use just a fraction of the wasted billions to support the tiny minority of highly vulnerable under 70s? Surely you can see that makes more sense than dropping a nuclear bomb on the entire country? Surely?!

You don't believe this can happen? In their own documents, it says they are peddling a sense of threat. And your assertion of Gates as an 'altruist' and 'philanthropist' borders on laughable fantasy. You simply glaze over, as most do, at the links all over the place, and the influence on world health policy. Why on earth do all 8 billion people on the planet need a vaccine for something that is no worse than flu? And taking away the figure manipulation, much less so. In a sane year, this wouldn't even be in the news now, nevermind destroying lives with lockdowns. Billionaires have seen their wealth skyrocket during this. They're laughing. 30,000 excess care home deaths, as reported back in July. It will be well above this figure now, as the policy continues. www.bbc.com/news/uk-53280011

I don't think anyone here actually wants to decimate the economy and nobody thrives in a lockdown, you would have to be pretty insane to think that way. But there's. Clear difference between wanting it and thinking it's the right way to go about things. I don't have the answers but we need to stop the excess deaths Vs economy arguments that dominate social media and forums. You don't think I should shield and perhaps you are right, but without a correctly functioning immune system, that would be a huge risk to take. Edit: oops, quoted the wrong reply

You'd have to think there is something structurally wrong with an economy (and public health) where the third biggest industry relies on people getting pissed. Other countries will look to manufacture or export their way out of recession. We'll have to all drink ourselves into oblivion.

THE SECOND WAVE APPEARS TO HAVE PEAKED BEFORE LOCKDOWN It was only four weeks ago that Boris Johnson plunged Britain into a second lockdown. The Prime Minister, flanked by Chris Whitty and Patrick Vallance, said that he could not ignore the modelling. Deaths, the Prime Minister explained, could reach 'several thousand a day', with a 'peak of mortality' worse than April. 'Doctors and nurses would be forced to choose which parents to treat, who would get oxygen and who wouldn't, who would live and who would die,' he warned. Today, however, with the country about to enter a new, tougher tiered system, the latest figures raise serious questions over those claims - and consequently, the need for a second lockdown. Since March, I've been running the ZOE app assisted by King's College London to predict the number of Covid cases across the UK. Over a million people use it to report any symptoms they might have on a weekly basis and from there we set about analysing the data. This sets it apart from other studies and allows us to generate rapid, near real-time data. Our numbers track cases in line with other sources, including the Office for National Statistics' Covid-19 Infection Survey which randomly tests households across England, the Imperial College React-1 study and Department of Health test figures. Covid-19 rates for the UK are now falling in nearly all major regions. The government and the opposition, who believe in lockdown, will say the fall in the number of confirmed cases, deaths and hospitalisations proves lockdown 2.0 was a success - regardless of the extra health costs associated with lockdowns. Looking at our data, I concluded last month that we had passed the peak of new Covid-19 cases before we went into the second English lockdown. Our data has since been backed up by the ONS survey and GP surveillance records that track new consultations. Hospital admissions, which lag new cases, also peaked shortly after 5 November lockdown. www.spectator.co.uk/article/the-second-wave-appears-to-have-peaked-before-lockdown

Schools being fed to the lions. My 9 year old had to self isolate for 14 days, went back school for 4 days then had to self isolate for 14 days again. My 12 year old last week had to stay off school because the staff where self isolating. It's a shambles. I was an advocate of getting the schools back open but this in/off/in/off is causing chaos.

One of them has a kid in year 7 who has isolated for 10 and now has to for 14 days more. His missus works in a school and is isolating too. Another colleague's year 11 kid has just been sent home as their bubble has bost. It's a joke.

It wasn't until I read Halligan's piece (linked above) that I realised that it's actually 92% of all workers who don't live with people over the age of 65. Armed with that knowledge, it seems absolutely inconceivable that we're doing what we're doing. First time around, fine, we weren't absolutely sure what it was all about but now? It will be well above this figure now, as the policy continues. www.bbc.com/news/uk-53280011In your head the WEF is some evil organisation hell bent on world domination whereas in reality they are pressure group with no actual political power with an agenda to persuade governments and global organisations to adopt a moderated form of capitalism that benefits the whole of mankind rather than just a privileged elite. Associating Bill Gates with the WEF does not demonstrate that he shares their evil agenda. If anything both the WEF and Gates share a view that capitalism has to go beyond greed to retain any credibility. Bill Gates is one of the richest men in the word and rather than keep that wealth to himself he's established the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and his pouring billions of his personal wealth into improving health care and education around the world (see here). The only people who would find this threatening are those that what to make money out of exploiting the poor for personal gain and those committed to a form of capitalism premised on greed and the maintenance of a mega rich elite. He is being demonised because his altruism shows up others for what they are - self serving greedy bastards. You've bought into the whole WHO/WEF/Bill Gates evil empire nonsense. The reality is the WHO, WEF and Bill Gates are forces for good in this world - it's you and your conspiracy theory puppet masters are the real threat to a better world.

So Wales goes into a lockdown for two weeks. The kids go back to school half way through it and you wonder why cases go up Ah so if we go back to the summer we won’t find you calling for the schools to have gone back etc. 😂

The kids go back to school half way through it and you wonder why cases go up So the lockdown in Wales didn’t succeed then The fuckers ( British governments) are making it up on a daily basis and are stabbing in the dark As long as you’ve got lemmings who agree with it all they’ll continue to stab in the dark and all whilst previously successful businesses are on the edge of existence No doubt the lemmings will be along in a minute to again justify it And then you have the people that anything they try is wrong. It’s all getting pathetic and laughable but crack on.

The governments are in this utterly crazed irreversible state of madness that is just beyond words. I keep saying it but you can totally see how oppressive regimes seize control of the people. We've had 9 months of this shit propaganda driven from parliament and the lamestream media and over 60% of the nation (so we are told) have totally bought into this outlandish, catastrophic, totalitarian response. Thankfully the common sense "minority" are fighting back. Outside of our health and family, our freedom is just about the most important thing we have (and directly impacts the other two necessities). Just snap out your pro lockdown bubbles for a minute. It's 2020 in the UK - Peaceful elderly protestors who have given their life to the country are bring dragged into police vans in tears, middle aged businessman with families to feed who have lost everything and youngsters who are losing out on education by the day are being arrested for peacefully protesting for their freedom - how can any individual justify this crazed approach for the sake of a tiny tiny proportion of people who have a tiny tiny chance of dying from this thing. It's a health and safety cycle of madness that will set a seriously disturbing precedent for future generations (and our own).

I guess we are long overdue wars in the west and large scale unrest... Maybe this will be the trigger for it. It's a seriously concerning period in history and it's not just the UK. This has been a globally led pro lockdown response (with the odd admirable exception) that has completely stripped populations of their human civil liberties while causing widespread suffering. We can only hope those responsible are held accountable. I doubt it.

Like this you mean ? My mum will be with us for Christmas irrespective of what the Government says. Well if we don't try and control it now there will be no Xmas this year whatsoever. I don't agree with Drakeford`s OTT policy in general but with it he's got one eye on getting infections down so he can give the Welsh people respite over the Xmas period. The Welsh may well have the last laugh on this when they come out of the fire break and they can totally open up restrictions there over the Xmas period whilst we're battling away with tier 3 lockdowns all over the place and Xmas totally cancelled. .

We can debate whether to continue lockdown as cases surge. But the real folly was not containing the virus early. Japan has a population of 126 million. It is the oldest population in the world. It is a very densely populated country. How many Covid deaths have there been? Around 2000. With no lockdown. How did they do it? As soon as the first cases hit, they required masks (already popular), mandatory testing, and strictly enforced quarantine for people who tested positive or were exposed. Taiwan took a similar approach. 23 million people, densely populated, 7 deaths. No lockdown. The early measures taken by Japan and Taiwan would have caused a "you're violating our freedoms!" outcry in North America and Europe. But by giving up those minor freedoms, people in Japan and Taiwan have been enjoying all the major freedoms as the rest of the world is stuck inside debating on social media. This.

You can totally see where its coming from. I always find it amazing and terrifying in equal measure how easy it is to control and supress people in the name of doing a good dead... In this case its in the name of the health service. So you basically end up with millions of brainwashed people all thinking they are doing a good thing by locking themselves away. When in reality they are destroying their own lives - as the article rightly points out.
