Good to see that we are just two points behind Walsall in the Pontins League. I can't get my head round how the reserve leagues work. The Pontins Division we are in has a mix of mainly Div 1 teams plus a few from the lower divisions in the North of England as you might expect. Why is it though, that some Divison 1 sides play in reserve leagues against Premiership teams? If a team gets relegated from the Premiership does its reserve side simply stay in one of the Premiership reserve leagues until someone notices? What happens to sides Promoted from Div 1? If they go into the Premiership reserve leagues then the leagues will grow each season unless someone drops out. Can anyone make sense of this?

If a team gets relegated from the Premiership does its reserve side simply stay in one of the Premiership reserve leagues until someone notices? I think you've just about applied the hammer to the nail there Fornside. It's a bit of a joke and a lottery. On a related subject, Newcastle United only recently started to run a reserve team again and they are now a division below us. So, somehow, a Premier team like Newcastle have reserves playing at our level, while the likes of Derby, Coventry, West Brom and Nott'm Forest play against Premiership opposition. It's all a bit of a joke and one compounded by the fact that the year the premier teams left the likes of Stoke, etc, to fend for themselves, our lads actually completed a double over Manchester United's reserves. It was obviously getting a little too embarrassing for them!

Apart from being unfair, the present set up can't be good for players' development. If we got promoted yet our reserves continued to play in the Pontins League (which we might win this season!) then the step up from Pontins League to Premiership football would be a heluva difficult task for a youngster.
Smudge - Any chance of a few links to the whole reserve set up for Prem and nationwide sides throughout the country?

Newcastle Utd have two reserve teams. One is in the "Premier Reserve North" with the rest of the big boys and one is in the "Pontins League Division One East" with the not so big boys! I was reading through it a while ago whilst trying to find what league we were now in as I wanted to look at the table. www.nufc.com/html/reserves.html
