I've just started Dead Space again having realised I own it on Origin and so teore myself away from the PS4. Even 12 years it on it still scares the life out of me. Tense, atmospheric and jumpy, if a little bit clunky in game play. Got me thinking what other "scary games there were/are". Obviously Resident Evil and the dog through the window stands out. Also, I played Outlast after it was free on PS+ a few years ago. Jesus, that was so intense only lasted half an hour or so!
Any others? I never played Silent Hill so couldn't comment on that...
I remember playing Aliens vs Predator many years ago on pc with headphones on and lights of. A one point I knew I was going be attacked motion detectors going off with the unmistakable ping it’s dark and steamy in the area I was moving through but I only had 30 rounds left for my rifle. I turned a corner and an alien jumped at me I shit myself loosed if the full clip and fell of my chair totally immersed in the experience. When I composed myself I realised it was a pipe that had fell from the ceiling what looked like a shiny alien head, I then turned the next corner got impailed by an alien turned of the pc and went bed 🖕. For new games alien isolation is a very immersive and scary experience especially with lights off and headphones on, my car nearly got launched through the tv when it jumped on me playing that once.
I'll never forget settling in to play the first Resident Evil on the PS1, was on launch day too so no spoilers had been forthcoming. Lights off, sound up and then it happened - I got to the L-shaped corridor. Those fucking dogs jumping through the window, I not only jumped out of my fucking skin but I swear I left my chair by a good few inches.
Just bought Generation Zero, it's on sale on Steam for £12 with the DLC, and some of those fucking robots are creepy as fuck when they're on to you. The whole setting is pretty creepy too, a deserted Swedish archipelago in the 80s with eerie mist shrouded forests.
