I followed a guy into Chester this morning who was driving a motorcaravan with the plate "PDO 262" on it, I read this as "peedo" - very public spirited of him to warn everyone off... wished i had a dashcam... My old man despised private plates, so i waited until he was no longer with us before buying some. What does the oatie think ?...are they the mark of the conceited or a useful way of pretending your car is ageless ? B2 MKN

Completely and utterly pointless in my opinion. But if someone wants to spend their money on them good luck to them.....

Bit baffled why it would bother someone else what you had on your car, not doing them any harm and if that is something that concerns you maybe take a good look at yourself. PDO not a great choice though I must say.

It's not for me but, hey, it's a free country, who am I to judge. A guy at work who happens to be Afro Caribbean was thinking of having one that started C18 until we put him right on a few things! Biggest problem I've had with them is that my unwashed sister used to have P66 VFC. 🤬

It's all relative. Some of the prices of them are horrendous. Even if you had lottery-winner wealth, shelling out upwards of 4 or 5 figures for two pieces of plastic that are often a private joke seems crazy I guess. But - something is worth what someone will pay I guess. In a fit of optimism/pride back in 2002 after promotion to the Championship, I had a trawl of the DVLA website for something that I could demonstrate my Stoke-ness with. As luck would have it, there were a few that were fairly obvious "STOKE" reg's and all at the basic DVLA price of £250 . I went for one that had one of my initials and found a place in Stoke that could put the Stoke crest on as well. Since then I've had serious and semi-serious offers for it over the years (I wish I'd bought another couple back in 2002 and put them on retainers as investments. - But I won't sell the reg - it's "me" now (and my lad wants it one day ). And yes, they do have the benefit of hiding the age of a car!

Came across the perfect one for my son many years ago hanging on the wall in the office of of a Rolls Royce repair workshop we used to supply cleaning kit to. All his christian name initials WBJ1.I made the guy what I thought was a reasonable offer but he wasn't letting it go. Pity.

Not for me, like keeping my details private and advertising initials and/or Christian name isn't for me.

Love it , have nothing to hide by people identifying me. It is on what some might call a banger, but I am driving around in a 17yr old car so I don’t think cock or poser applies. Due to the age of my car I may have to change it soon. If I buy a brand new one I will retain the number and stick a 18 yr + number plate on it. 😀

Well, cock or not, I'm keeping mine I reckon the dodgy ones are where someone has made a desperate attempt to form their name by pretending a 5 is an S etc. But in an age where everybody is expected to conform I'd love to own F OFF

Each to their own.
I do chuckle at the ones that are supposed to be their name, or whatever, and they've had to scrape the barrel to make it work, eg:
Robert - R10BRT Walters- W47TRS
etc...
What's the point?

The cheapest way is to change your name by deed pole to your car reg number. Can’t get more personalised than that. Signed BF02KWN

If you’re a billionaire and can afford A1 then fair enough, it’s a sign of wealth. The fewer digits the more it’s worth. If your plate is D8V3 WBN and it has to say Dave Wimbourne at the bottom, so people know what it means, in dymo tape then get in the fucking sea.

Why would it bother you?

Vanity I reckon. If you're absolutely minted ok I suppose but why waste money on a plate, put it to better use.

In my experience the bloke who doesn't filter into roadwork lane closures until he hits the first cone 82.5% of the time has a personal number plate.

Does the plate PEN1S exist or is it an urban myth? PEN15 is or was owned by Steve Parrish, the ex motorcycle and truck racer. I think he bought it in the seventies to wind up his local villagers. He later found it was a very good investment. Not sure if he still has it...
