I see we're being linked with centre halves this window. Is this a sign that Ryan's injury is worse than thought. Have there been any updates since he went off injured a few games ago - the silence is deafening from the club on this.

He's suffered 2 setbacks in attempting to come back from his horror injury in pre-season.
He is getting long in the tooth as well and you wonder if he is over his well documented back problems.
I hope we can get him back as a going concern, no one else has looked nearly as commanding.
But who knows...

O’Neill said last week he’d miss the West Brom game as it was too soon, it’s only 5 days since that
It’s not long term

The kind of injuries he's getting is the norm for someone coming back from a serious injury, we probably won't see him back regularly until next season tbh.

Anyway, I don't think we can expect to rely on Ryan from now on as he isn't getting any younger and injuries seem to be coming and going all the time. It's nice to know though that both Collins and Souttar are promising young central defenders already on our books.

These niggling and secondary injuries always crop up after return from a more significant one. It's the body's way of compensating for relative inactivity and moving differently to protect the main injury. Has always happened and always will. The age factor with Ryan means it just needs to take a little longer to recover from the secondary niggles. Once he has done and got some games under his belt he will be OK, but of course in his early thirties the niggles become more frequent and recovery times longer which breaks up momentum. He needs a good run of games to flush out the niggles once he can.

I think the smart thing to do is get someone on loan and rest Ryan wherever possible until the summer, I think we're (rightly) very nervous to rush him back now.

Nathan Collins reminds me of a young Ryan Shawcross

Seems like Ryan's injuries are catching up with him, he's never in for long now before being out again

I think the wording "don't think we can expect to rely on Ryan from now on" is wrong. We can certainly rely on him to do his best whenever he runs out on the pitch. How often that is is less reliable, but he could still be in the team every so often for a few more years. Neither Collins nor Souttar seem to have O'Neill's number. It could change, but it would have been nice if Collins had been called upon when Batth and Lindsay were struggling, which they have been for most games except WBA.

I love Ryan, but if he can't play regularly I think we'll fare better with a player able to play most of the games. A defensive unit needs to play together to become a unit as I see it.

Maybe I'm wide of the mark with the back. 33 in October, perhaps that's the biggest threat to his longevity. Don't get me wrong, I love the guy, but we're right to line up a successor.

We have one in Nathan Collins. Anybody we do sign this month will probably only be a temporary one to help us through the situation we currently find ourselves in.

He played a whole championship season last season. He’s been back in the wars. His back seems fine. He didn't play a whole term last season. He played 36, which means he missed out on 10 games. But it wasn't (officially( because he was injured. He was dropped, first by Rowett, then by Jones, though it's up to discussion whether he was dropped because he was not fully fit. His form was poor. Like many other players last season, playing in a division below was demotivating. But whatever you think of Rowett and Jones, they did the right thing; each time he was dropped he came back with a vengence.

Hurry up Ryan, just so we don't have to endure too many more minutes from Batth.

Not a massive fan of Shawcross (as a player not person) but Batth is getting slower and makes the defence look a complete shower
