Crazy that you can get a hotel room for a night for 2/3rds the price of the match ticket.

An interesting thing about being a football fan that often gets ignored is the way fans commit or travel to matches, especially away, to see their team, and the arrangements they might make to be there on the day and time. Especially for lunchtime Sunday kick offs in London. And yes many fans have to stay overnight to make their travel plans work.
Reading a significant piece yesterday about an upcoming Cardiff v Swansea match. Because of previous crowd trouble in these Welsh Derbies, only Swansea fans travelling on official club coaches can get tickets for the game and attend. The ridiculous plight of one fan was highlighted. A Swansea fan who lives in Cardiff is obliged to go to the match using "official" approved transport. Therefore he has to travel from Cardiff to Swansea, get a supporters coach to the match and back and then travel home again as a round trip. Mind you I failed to see why, once in Cardiff, he couldn't just get lost and slip home again after the match and not bother with the coach trip back. Perhaps he wasn't very bright or perhaps his car would be still in Swansea, but then again there are trains available to get from Cardiff to Swansea to begin with.
But still the problems of being a committed fan!.

Mate me and my daughter did exactly the same for the Derby v Stoke game when Cotterill was in charge, picked up on the A50 at Shardlow services on the coach provided by the club for out of town Stoke fans.Travel up the M1 one junction to J25 then down the A52 to Pride Pk. Tickets given out on the coach to supporters if I remember rightly and all for 1,019 away supporters🙄And to top it all off we lost 2-1 to a late Malcolm Christie goal as well😄

Exactly the point. But as long as we have FFP and VAR technology etc, who cares about the fans.

Some good news for us in a way on the Derby front Their cup tie at Northampton is now on TV on the 24th and they’ve rearranged their league game with Luton for the 28th Jan just 3 days before they play us on the Fri 31st.Hopefully after we’ve beaten Swansea on the 25th we’ve then got a 6 day break before the Derby game whereas they’ve got a game 3 days previous now.

Back in the 80s there used to be some orrible fleapit hotels across from the station. Fleas were an optional extra. Times changed and they are probably either out of business or have upped their game.

Aston Court Hotel as it is now and the Midland Hotel to the left of the station are decent hotels nowadays I reckon you’re probably on about the York Hotel( now the Aston Court) directly opposite the station

Some very good real ale pubs in Derby - The Brunswick just round the corner from the train station in particular is really worth a visit.

I was also recommending this to anyone staying over at the nearby hotel rather than before the match.

He recommends The Brunswick and I have a drink in there in the past when travelling to Stoke by train. Living in Nottingham I will be able to back home by train after the match. Not everywhere is as bad as Stoke-on-Trent for the train service.
