I think this is incredibly exciting. I remember seeing him for Leeds and thinking what a fucking ace player he looked.
Hopefully MON can get him focused and flying!

It’s similar logic to that of the management and coaching staff of then 2nd division FC St Pauli, who decided that over two loan periods Verlinden was only good enough to represent their reserve team. It will be five years this summer since Verlinden joined Stoke and shouldn’t he have made some kind of breakthrough by now ? Or are all the various managers, coaches since 2016 wrong about him. I mean all our coaches and managers since then bar the current one have all been fucking atrocious. I thought you called the present manager a coward and a liar ?

Can you not accept that Verlinden isn't good enough? Does it have to be MON's fault he's not playing and not his? Is that not a possibility that there is a slight chance that he's just not good enough, rather than MON being totally blind to his Messi-esque ability...? I think it's nonsense given what we've had to put up with for the last 6 weeks. He's better than Brown and Vokes. So yes it is. He might not be good enough, we don't know do we. That's what is annoying! I think we do know mate. He's not not playing for any other reason.

He looked surprisingly poor against Marine I thought but unless he's played against and I didn't notice him I've never watched him otherwise. Dele Alli looked shit too but I’d take him as well. Alli played well.

I don't think it's a vendetta at all. I just don't think he rates him. People don't want to say that and it amuses me greatly. Maybe he rates him in terms of his footballing ability but not in terms of his attitude. Maybe but I don't think that's the case. His attitude has always been good. I just don't think he's his sort of player in the slightest. Which is a shame because he is a very good player. It's the clamour to think he has a crap attitude that pisses me off because it's just not true.

Which options were they then? I'm guessing you're referring yet again to Verlinden who you obviously think you are a better judge of than the coaching staff. To think he could be our main attacking threat and if he was on the field we'd not need to be defensive is slightly ridiculous. Unlike youth football when a team only have one attacking threat the opposition target him and double mark him. Even Powell has struggled with that since Campbell's injury. If MON is an ultra defensive manager and the last few weeks have been how he likes to play instead of emergency measures, and if he doesn't trust youth how come he is targetting all these potentially exciting players? It's thinking the same as thinking Campbell could have done it 13 months ago. Yeah he'd help Powell Unlike what we have had to endure this past month, that's my bloody point! There's no doubt that he's been overly defensive and wasted a month. But like I've always said he's a good manager. I don't think he overly has faith in youth either, they're just the best players at his disposal that we own already. And transfer wise again they're what we're going to get. So he has to use them. Campbell struggled with the increased attention and physicality when he played last season. He was often left on the floor appealing to the referee who ignored his appeals. From what I've seen Verlinden would be no different. Hence as we were at first last season we need to be well organised defensively to allow those players to learn. The best youth players do not always make the best first team players.

From our perspective, I think it is very odd Verlinden hasn't been a regular over the past 5-6 games. But surely MON has done enough to prove he's more than willing to trust the youth when he needs them? Especially with the signings he's making this window. I think the whole 'I'll trust MON's opinion over yours' argument is complete shite. But I do think we have to trust what he's seeing and what we aren't. Your last paragraph is a complete contradiction.

Great. Love to see young, exciting prospects being linked / signed (loan or otherwise given FFP atm). However, if we're being totally pragmatic, which do we need more urgently: ano winger (MoN must really, really have lost all faith and hope in JMcC, TV & TI) or A goal scorer down the middle? Either or. Get a winger in, you've got Brown up top. Get a striker in, you've got Brown on the wing. Some would say that's the exact same problem, but at least you're getting Vokes out of the team... Fine. But only if you have confidence in Brown. Not sure I do.

I assume we're not allowed to sign anyone else then? why waste money on players we don’t need? That's as maybe but that's the managers prerogative. It wasn't, as I assume you know, the part of your post I was highlighting though. Just because we've signed some defenders and some wingers doesn't mean that in the next fortnight we can't sign someone who can get us the goals does it?

All Manager's, even the best, have their blind spots and make mistakes, MON is no different, however, I am blooming happy he's our manager and look forward to him being so for a good many years. Never have I enjoyed listening to interviews and press conferences so much. He always speaks with eloquence & calm.

I thought you called the present manager a coward and a liar ? He's definitely a coward. But he's a good manager. astonishing Calling any catholic man who grew up in the 70's/80's in a predominantly protestant town in NIreland a coward is in itself utterly ludicrous, once you spend even a cursory moment examining O'Neill's character it goes beyond parody. Can't think of a more preposterous argument re Verlinden - he hasn't bene given a chance because he arses about in training, it's nothing to do with his ability (which is obvious). re his approach to this season he's - as he said he would do - addressed the issue from last season (& the previous seasons) of Stoke being easy to score against , he's done that with safety first tactics & by good coaching on the training ground (credit to his staff of course). He's brought through the other young players brilliantly apart from Edwards who, guess what (?) has been an arse re his being pissed at the training ground (unacceptable). attacking wise we have very little other than Campbell, Powell & Fletcher & FFP is what it is so he's now addressing that by signing/attempting to sign good attacking players. at no point has he been a coward if your disappointed at the lack of good attacking play well tough, he's building the side from tHe back first. He's not Pulis who always wants defensive football (that's tactical cowardice) he's more akin to Waddington who built a dour side first & then added quality attacking football later Cowards don't play Souttar & Collins or even Campbell If he was a coward he would have taken the Celtic job when it was offered to him a few years ago, that's an easy gig. Instead he waited for the right club (that's us by the way although you wouldn't know it with some of the stuff on this board) even though we looked doomed at the foot of the table, no cowardice there. would absolutely love to see anyone call O'Neill a coward to his face

His approach this season has been appalling. We didn't need to go so defensive. Last season under him we were generally fine at the back. He's been very much like Pulis. He waited way too long to play all 3 of them. And still isn't using Collins correctly. And tbh Campbell should be used more up front now too, well if he was fit. Verlinden's attitude is fine too, that's just nonsense.

Wait until the summer of 2022. When we will be able to have a lot more room to manoeuvre with so many current players coming to the end of their contracts. MON is doing an exceptional job in very tight circumstances. The fact that we are 8th and 2'points off the playoffs is the reason that we are a more attractive proposition than we were when he came in.

He's still not really using Collins greatly. Campbell:- would now be plying his trade north of the border, stayed and extended his contract, when fit was easily lasting the full 90mins, and was beginning to fulfill his pedigree as a potent striker, now I think this is down to O’Neill and his staff. Collins & Souttar have played the majority of the season since O,Neill introduced them into the first team when it would have been a safer option to use experience instead of youth.

I came onto a thread to see what the deal was and what people thought of Jack Clarke potentially signing but it seems this thread has been hijacked by Bayern banging the same drum over and over and over.....
We know you want Verlindans children Bayern,
many managers, coaches, other teams staff over the past 5 years have suggested that he’s not all that.
What is your obsession, it’s freaking weird!!
If Verlinden ever plays and he looks good - great, but stop with all of your claims that he’s awesome, the manager is a coward blah blah as if you know more than anyone else - as if you’ve been his personal mentor and the rest of the world is out to get him.
Please just give it a rest.
So..... anyways.... Jack Clarke huh?

Yes and that's great but it still took a while when it was obvious he was one of the better options. Collins has been played out of position and Souttar started on the bench despite being easily the best CB in pre season and clearly should have been starting. But we got there in the end. And hopefully we will with Collins too.
