Farmer looked like another Banks in the making when he first established himself as a teenager in the first team.Later he lost confidence and started making mistakes which were not evident when he first came into the team. This later resulted in the purchase of Gordon Banks as Waddo lost patience. . The reason given on this thread was bullying by Maurice Setters. i have no knowledge of this but if true it does not reflect well on Setters, who was one of, if not the hardest man ever to play for Stoke. John Farmer did recover sufficiently to become a very good first team keeper, but never in my opinion scaled the heights he showed as a teenager. Butland scaled similar heights when he first came into the team a few years back, but it now remains to be seen if he can regain what he had before his broken ankle. If he is sold at a bargain price, as former player Clive Clarke has recommended should happen to streamline the present over sized asquad, perhaps Joe Bursik is ready to take his place? Afterall he will now be about the same age as John Farmer when he first made his debut for Stoke in the mid 1960s.

Did anyone read any of poetry books? I came across some in anthologies quite some time ago.
I thought they were good.

Undoubtedly Shilton was good as Gods says....but my point in the OP he never really connected/ found his home at Stoke....in the way that Banksy or Hudson did for example.....we like that type of player at Stoke...one of our own , whether native or adopted. I actually started the thread to get people's opinions on players who we perhaps did not get the best out of...like Peschisolido....not just Farmer. You did indeed, and got ignored For me Pesh was an ok player at that level, nothing special at all. Tuncay should never have come at all, and certainly contributed very little. Pulis didn't want him but had to take him to get Huth, his real target. ( I've said this repeatedly over the years, and been shouted down, but a relative was closely involved at Boro at the time. They desperately needed 2 Prem wages off the books and this was their chance) I was so excited when we signed Tuncay, but our manager was not interested in playing him at all. His career got off to the worst possible starts when he was at first not picked to play, then when he came on as a sub at Hull was substituted within minutes because we got a red card. That summed up TP's attitude towards him. Despite this, he was always a very committed player but got very few chances and never got a proper run of games to get any momentum. A very decent player who we didn't know how to use. A real waste imho.

A very decent player who we didn't know how to use. A real waste imho. Certainly a very talented player, but not a team player. Selfish with the ball and always wanting to score himself when sometimes the better option was to create a better chance for a team mate. Not prepared to expend much energy helping out defending.
