Having watched the bloke a lot over the year he was with the academy sides I’d love to know what has gone with him?
Genuinely thought he could have made it with us or another side in the bottom half of the prem or championship and that he just needed more minutes for his talent to shine.
Doubt talent was the problem I wonder it’s more a head/ heart/ desire issue

I failed to se what was his strenghts other than lots of energy and huffing and puffing when coming in from the bench. I hope he does well though.

Did his ACL when he came back from Bolton, just as he was getting game time for us. I reckon if he stayed with us, rather than moving to Holland, he’d have played for us loads last year.

Doubt he would have played at all if he was with us last season because MoN didn’t rate him and thought there was more about Rabbi and Clarke that he brought in instead - and they hardly blew anyone away did they!? Sometimes tricksy little players like TV that can do all the knee wobble, over-step, flip-floppa-pop-shots get lauded over as being really promising/talented/skilful/bags of potential in their early days by fans that see them. The truth is that there so much more to it, gotta train and develop as the coach have set out for you, have to gel and work with, help out your team mates, have to build yourself physically where you’re lacking, know/understand and study the game, listen and be able to implement, mental strength, correct personality and professionalism. Yeah Verlinden could do the tricks, had a whiff of flair and eek out a high up and under cross on a small u23 pitch but other than that and a bit of dribbling, taking it past an opposition 17yr old fullback now and again - that was about it. The limitations of his ability have come to light and he is at his correct level in his career.

From what I witnessed when he did play his ego was a tad greater than his ability. I remember his attitude in a pre season game at Lincoln...not what I would have expected from a fringe player trying to earn a start A sad waste of what ability he has/had ...the curse of Bayern really struck him down

If I worked in the media I’d like to think I had a bit more originality than resorting to the most overused cliche in football. I quite like the fact that that cliche, as well as our reputation as a tough aggressive team from the early Prem years gives our club a degree of notoriety abroad that’s probably greater than our achievements deserve. I feel like we have a stronger “brand identity” than most clubs our size, even if that identity is based on decade old stereotypes. I totally get your point but that saying does my head in. And it does nothing but perpetuate the wider stereotype that Stoke itself is a shit hole, which the city really needs to shake off. They’re laughing at us, not with us.

Perhaps, but I have never interpreted it as a slight on Stoke on Trent as a whole implying it’s an unpleasant place to visit. I’ve always taken it to be referring specifically to our ground as cold, windswept, and often hostile, which to be fair it is.

It certainly contributed. I think having Peter Crouch play for us for many years helped too. He’s one of the most recognisable footballers of this century.

It's frustrating when these young players don't come through. Marshall, Vass and Verlinden were all supposed to be the next big things and it never happened. Sad for them and for us.
On the other hand, Souttar was given no chance of making it on here.
Shows what we know!

It can happen over weeks, months or years, it can happen steadily , it can happen dramatically. All kinds of things contribute to the process..... mental, physical, psychological, hard work, good/bad advice and coaching, intelligence, stability, instability, injuries....you name it!

Nearing 52 pages now on bayernoatcakes starlet, which 95% of us knew wouldn’t amount to anything. He was fortunate to sign for a second rate Dutch side despite talk of it being comparable to the championship which is utter bollocks of course. I really wish him the best of luck but he’s always struck me as a lower league player and that’s exactly what’s happening.

On the other hand, Souttar was given no chance of making it on here. Shows what we know! No chance? That’s not true in the slightest. He always looked a good footballer. When he joined though we were an established PL club and he needed to do more. He came to us as a 16 year old who had already played Scottish league games don’t forget. It depends on what you class as making it I guess. For me if he had hit a ceiling as a league one player then IMO that is making it. He’s a professional footballer. The academy did well. It was clear though after his first loan at Fleetwood that L1 was probably too easy for him. I remember watching him when he on loan to whatever Scottish side we sent him to before Fleetwood and he couldn’t win a header. He was rushing out of the line and jumping under them. So with from with him like Campbell actually there’s always been goals they had to hit. I still think that with him now. He’s gone from being one of the most underrated players on here (I was shot down for wanting him in the mix 6-12 months before it happened) to being the most overrated player on here. He’s clearly a very good Champo defender now. But does things that to progress he will need to cut out. Just like the heading thing at his Scottish loan. But what I really like about him is that he clearly learns, listens and works on these things. He’s got natural talent, he’s got the height now he just needs to improve 1 on 1 and try to improve his pace over 5 yards. If he can do that then a PL club will definitely take him. Same with Campbell, his loan to Shrewsbury IMO made him. It was about the best footballing decision Jones made. In the youth side he scored loads but only if it was on his left foot. His hold up play wasn’t the best and he was greedy. Which isn’t a bad thing for strikers but can be annoying when better options are there. He was also not as strong as he should have been. The Shrewsbury loan changed his physicality. He held the ball up much better and he looked up a lot more. No doubt after getting bollocked by senior pros for being a greedy shit. What’s so impressive about Campbell now is his all round game. His right foot is as good his left. Watching him in the u18s that just didn’t happen. And last season showed what a creative player he can be as well as a sublime finisher. So yeah, I think with Souttar it’s not that anyone didn’t think he could, it’s just that he had a lot to prove and a lot to improve. And he did it.

He is BO's latest Adam Vass. Vass did well after leaving us 😂 Played for Hungary 11 times. Played at Brescia for 5 seasons, 1 in Serie A. Just 11 caps for Hungary is actually a damning indictment really considering he was first capped as a senior International whilst he was basically still a child in our Youth team. The lads had a decent enough career but he just wasn't good enough for us at that time.
