Why do we put up with this rubbish?
If you were in a relationship and it made you feel like watching Stoke does, you would of left it straight away. Or if your mates keep disappointing you it would be exactly the same.
What makes us stick with the same heart break and disappointment each week?
I have supported Stoke 20 years, have no intention of supporting another club, but I just don't understand why I keep following something that makes me feel like shit most weeks.

After 20 years I'm pretty sure you should have worked it out.
Love of your team is unconditional...you may hate (at some time or other) the performance(s), the manager(s), some players, owners, directors, ticket office staff, other fans, most of your family, many of your friends, people you have never met, tv personalities, politicians, work colleagues, bosses...but you will always love SCFC

Because you live in hope that one day the Vicky Pollard you went to bed with has overnight turned into Scarlet Johannson when you wake up. You know it ain't going to happen but the hope keeps you locked in.

All football fans are the same whether it's us , Vale, Accrington or Fisher Athletic. In most cases parents or friends get you into it and it's in the blood then as previous posters said.
Let's be honest we are puddled at times, if someone said come watch an outdoor cinema screening in February for 90 minutes costing 25 quid and minus 2 weather you'd think they were loopy.
All football fans of whatever team sit in all weather's watching garbage.
And I'll tell you why we put up with it Bolton Liverpool Everton etc etc.
Unfortunately the Premier diluted our fan base, there are numerous on here who go mental whether we score v Man City or Hartlepool away. A goal is a goal . That's why I go

You put up with it because you have this unconditional love for your club.
No matter what league we play in or how we play, I can never fall out of love with Stoke City. They're our club, and there isn't going to be another one.
You put up with the bad because you think somewhere, somehow, it's gonna be fine. Right now, supporting Stoke is like you and your missus being angry at each other. Then you win a game out of the blue and its like having angry but disappointing sex.
In the end, it'll all be fine again and sex is gonna be top notch.

A goal is a goal . That's why I go Yep it is basically an addiction- you go along as a youngster and don't know the first thing about any other teams. You get a fix from the feeling of the crowd exploding as the ball hits the back of the net, you progress to visualizing yourself as being one of the players when you play football yourself and you become part of a tribe. Only when you are too far in do you think hang on there are other teams about, what are they like and why did my dad/uncle etc bring me along to go through this pain. By then you are too far gone and the rest is history...Well that is what I am currently putting my 6 year old through (poor sod loves Jack Butland and wants to be a goalkeeper) whilst all his mates where I live are parading around in Man City/Man Utd/Liverpool and Everton tops. His mates haven't been to any games and whilst he has not seen us win at home since starting to go he is already Stoke ingrained:)!

The bad times make the good times so much more enjoyable. Some of my best memories were in the lower divisions.
It's not healthy to be a Stoke and England fan though.

You're quite right, as utterly out-of-love as I've ever been with SCFC after 40 years of watching them, when I look back, all my best memories are pre-Prem anyway. Maybe that's just the fancies of youth - getting lost in Huddersfield, soaked in Stockport and nearly being murdered at Vale Park but those are the good times I look back on fondly. The Prem years were great and there are a few stand-out moments don't get me wrong - but my best / favourite memories are all back in the day stuff. I think the reason I / we are so absolutely gutted about our position now is that back then we were just wank. I missed the Huddy days etc so never knew us to be anything other than wank. Then suddenly we weren't wank and in the topflight for 10 years, a place I genuinely (and my Dad absolutely) never thought I'd see. Now we are wank again but we have gone out of our way to be wank. We've almost done it on purpose and we've all seen it crumbling in slow motion before our eyes. That's why being a Stoke fan is so utterly shit right now. But, I have to believe that one day I'll roll over and Scarlett will be lying there once more. The dirty bitch.

It's a figure of speech to express the level of my exasperation at the ineptitude of those in charge. I do not actually believe that those in charge of a £multi-million product have deliberately nose-dived it. It was light-hearted frustration meandering gently into apathy.

Because nothing matches that feeling out of the ground having won. It's been thin on the ground for a couple of years but on balance Stoke has been nothing but positive in my life. I don't live in Stoke anymore, it gives me chance to have a pint with my mates who I see once every 2 weeks and it's just like old times. It's the terrace humour, the collective groans, elation etc.
Stoke's always so much more to me than the 90 mins and for that reason, no matter how bad or depressing it gets. I don't think I'll ever tire of it.

Unconditional, it's in the blood.
And in no other situation would I call a group of people (fellow fans) who some i disagree with so much, my friends/family, I'd leave... but we are all on this great shit ship Stoke City together.. and you now what I fucking love it.

The last time I saw somebody subjected to as much pain and humiliation as the average Stoke fan over the past 2 years was when I "accidentally" clicked on some dodgy German website...
Thing is, we all love it as much as that German bloke in the film did!!!

Early seventies
standing on a terrace aged seven surrounded by what appears to be giants
The smell of stale beer fags and the odd pipe and a lingering smell which takes a while to register the piss lying on the toilet floor
The sudden surge you went with the sway the noise the cheers The jeers the language you wouldn’t hear at home and are told not to repeat
The smell of onions frying the week old lukewarm sausage roll And a cup of bovril so hot it would take the skin off a rhino
The sound of individual radios all playing the theme tune to sports report the lilting tones of James Alexander Gordon
The huddle round the radio rentals window of the people without the radio
Oh and apparently there was a football game in between
The chance of a little boy to be in a mans world for the odd hour
That’s why even today I watch live football week in week out regardless of the score I do miss the smell of the pipe tobacco

This last few years have been tame compared to those awful earlier years!

That’s 56 years of which around half have been in the top flight. I keep following them because they are my home team. They make you feel like shit some days, other days they make you smile and occasionally, very occasionally they make you elated to be a fan. But don’t forget their fortunes will often plummet as well as fall. Stick with it, this time next year we will be errrrm...........moaning about a poor start to the season, still paying our bomb squad outrageous wages because nobody wants them, complaining about another poor transfer window and questioning how Teflon Scholes is still in a job.
