Thanks Smudge, David et al. Your hard work and dedication has become part of the history of our great club... and an institution for over 30 years. That is some achievement! Thanks also to the many contributors. That's why The Oatcake was a success. It was not just the view of a few dedicated fans... it was a balanced input from a large cross section of our support. Add to that the wit and banter and often laugh out loud covers, and you have the perfect vehicle for a fan's input. Is there a downside to the bloody fanzine? Yes! My lad will need to hire a crane to move this mahoosive box crammed with the bloody things under my office desk when I pop my clogs! Enjoy your retirement guys. OS.

As an exile, the Oatcake has always been welcome. Sad to see it go, but I have always been a most grateful subscriber. It made me laugh, made me think, but most of all made me feel connected to the club I love even if I am hundreds of miles away. Thanks guys.

What a sad day, it's been a big part of my life for around 25 years. Taken me from childhood, through my teens in the dark days of the mid-late 90s to the redemption in 2008 and a decade in the Premier League that I honestly never thought I'd see when we were a division below Crewe and Vale in the late 90s.
It's purpose has evolved through the years but it always managed to stay relevant. In the early days pre-internet it was one of the only ways for supporters to stay connected and share unfiltered opinions unofficially. Protests could be organised and strong opinions expressed in an uncensored way, along with the always brilliant editorials and comedy sections. As time went on and the internet started the paper Oatcake was no longer needed to connect and mobilise supporters, the message board had taken over that function in a far more instantaneous way. But it continued to be relevant thanks to the quality of the editorials and comedy. Essential on the bog reading, like subscribing to a quality magazine to supplement your news intake or indulge a personal interest.
I'll be very sad that it's gone. If anything with the way things are going at the club, we could well be heading towards another era where The Oatcake will be really needed. Things like fanzines often come into their own more during times of struggle when actions are required and humour needed to get through the difficult times. I do understand why they're calling it a day though. I'd imagine circulation is down like with any paper publication and as they're getting older it's probably getting to be more effort than it's worth. Both financially and in terms of how many fans the paper fanzine is actually reaching. Good quality content doesn't come by accident and it must involve a lot of effort and some very long hours to compile the fanzine and get it to print on time.
Enjoy your retirement, very well earned. Just please try to keep the message board going in some form or another. I'm not on Facebook or any of the other social media platforms, they annoy me, so I don't want all the Stoke news and opinions being shunted onto social media.

Part of growing up as a Stokie. Walking down Penkhull bank, jumping over the wall back of Kwik save (now Lidl) onto booth street before picking up.my oatcake mag from outside the club shop. So long oatcake and thank you wholeheartedly for your memories.

I shall be getting there early next Saturday to get one, my daughter is away with her mum so will miss it, but has become part of her match routine to go buy it for me . I lived in Stoke in the late 80s up til about 95 and used to see the guys selling it in the pubs before the game (Grays Corner especially) and still have those issues. Having lived away from the area for a long time and started going away with my now footy mad old, it was a pleasure to see Oatcake still being sold at games. You’ve put heart and soul into publishing this for a lot of years, and full credit and respect for that, I’ve had some laugh out loud moments courtesy of you, so sincere thanks and enjoy the time you will now get back! As an earlier poster said, perhaps a season review annually could be an option, but I guess retired is retired. All the best to you Martin/ Dave et al.

sad day, I have been on board since day 1, but since moving [5 years ago] I don't see many on sale on my new route to the ground occasionally picking one up outside the ground. good lad smudge is he doesn't know me but would allways speak as he recognised my face from the beehive, sea lion and the many away trips under the macari era happy days

I will miss it. Even though a two-weekly fanzine isn't as on-the-pulse as, say, FullerMagic pulling up an Azerbaijani tabloid linking us with Mahir Madatov of Qarabag FC within an instant of it being published, the quality of written material from the various contributors still outstrips anything found elsewhere. The Rob Doolan and Trouserdog articles were always a highlight, as was anything involving Miserable Merv.

For many years, buying the Oatcake was literally the only part of the match-day experience you could rely on to enjoy. The humour, depth and range of articles and unflinching quality of writing has been a credit to all involved. The Oatcake will be much missed but will go down as a significant part of Stoke City folklore! All good things come to an end but it’s a real shame this one does.

Funny as fuck always.
The Port Fail baiting and piss taking have always been the highlights for me.
This also successfully spilled over onto the message board and tugged at a handful of the unwashed morons chains. They couldn’t resist trying to fight their futile cause.
Thanks so much lads, it’s been a hell of a ride.

Have just read my copy of the final edition. A superb issue to go out in true style. While the editorial is quite personal, it certainly reflects the hopes, ambitions, fears and disappointments I have felt over the last 31 years. Martin's piece towards the end must surely speak to many of us of a certain age who were first introduced to the "joys" of being a Stoke supporter as a young child by our fathers, who shared their love of all things Stoke over many years and then as age and illness took its toll we were the ones supporting our fathers until the time came for them to go and watch the heroes of their youth again wherever it is that old men go. There is just enough room on my "Oatcake Shelf" for the final edition, so I have been saved the dilemma of deciding what to throw out to make room if there had been any more issues. Enjoy your well deserved "retirement" from the stresses and strains of producing a great read for every match and lets hope that there will be plenty of good times to enjoy over the next few seasons. Saturdays won't be the same again, though if I start reading them again from the start at one Oatcake per home game I might just have enough to see me through.

It is to be hoped the club appreciated the job this publication did in holding together support through some of the most difficult times in its history. Frequently as the organisation / team plumbed the absolute depths The Oatcake hit the heights with its witty and incisive comments and articles. More times than I care to remember reading the fanzine was the highlight of the day’s trek to North Staffs. Sadly I’m not there today so I will miss out on the last edition (I’ve got most since about issue no 4) but I want to say a personal thanks for a job brilliantly done by all concerned over the years.
