Really interesting programme on Radio 4 today mainly on the New Hansatic League but also on the old.
It suggested that the term "Sterling" originates from the old Hanseatic reference to Easterling in terms of the old currency.
I was over in Riga for a week about a month or so back and mean to do some reading on the Old Hanseatic League. The programme today suggested it was more about protectionism than free trade. I can't remember anything from back in the days when I studied the subject.
The programme referred to the Steelyard area of London on the Thames where German traders had a separate community and featured Kings Lynn which has the only remaing Hanseatic warehouse left in the UK.
