Played a few games for us and holds the record of most games played as an outfield player.. Any memories ? I can just about remember him in the same team as Wayne Clarke !

Very hard working guy played a humongous amount of games as he was so fit - short guy Nathan Jones would have loved him

Good 2nd tier player. Remember him being very quick and direct. A bile like Fraser from Bournemouth. Similar build too.

Lee Dixon owes Ford a debt of gratitude. Covered his marauding runs really well.

Ford was long gone by the time we got Clarke in on loan.
Fordy was a good solid pro. Not a particularly skillful player but solid and reliable. He was also willing to slot in anywhere he was asked. He played at right back and centre midfield as well as his customary right wing. Oddly for a winger he seemed a bit one paced and could sometimes beat his marker but lacked the acceleration to get away and break forward.
His compliance and consent to play anywhere made him a manager's dream. This could be a bit problematic though. If he was left out for whatever reason, and we won well, it would all have to be shuffled about to fit him in somewhere because of his excellent attitude.
Overall a good buy for us and his participation in the glorious winter of 86/87 secures affection from us.

A phenomenal career spanning the 70s to the 00s. Quite unthinkable that he played 89 games for Rochdale aged 40 to 42 right at the end.
Must have been one fit bloke!

A cracking player with a great work ethic. A bit of a SJW of his day. One of those players who will be well liked by the majority of supporters of every club he players for.

I remember Tony Ford having a great game against Stoke for Grimsby, in the early part of the 85/86 season. Mick Mills was up against him that night and he must have made an impression. I think it was Mark Chamberlains last game too. Two stand out goals were his pile driver volley against Shrewsbury away, and a great diving header at the Boothen End v Huddersfield. Whilst he wasn’t flash, Tony would have been the first name on the team sheet. I recall he represented the short lived England ‘B’ team whilst at West Brom. My last sight of Tony was playing for Rochdale at the Britannia Stadium at 40 years old. Take a bow Tony, the kettles always on for you down here.

I was Tony Ford mad as a kid, loved him.
Underrated player at Stoke, was a victim of his versatility and pretty much played in every outfield position on the pitch.......

Went school with his Son and Daughter. Was in his second stint with Grimsby at the time. Had no idea he played for Stoke prior at the time!

Tony Kelly!!! Now thats a whole new thread. The one we bought from Wigan aka Zico, was potentially one of the most gifted players we ever bought. Problem was he liked a pie or 3 did Tone.
The other Tony Kelly, who we plucked from Non League obscurity if memory serves me, was way out of his depth but will forever be remembered for nutmegging Bruce Grobbellar ( spelling? ) to score a late equaliser at Anfield on a wet Tuesday night in the league Cup in the Macari years! The only time I ever saw myself on tele in the crowd. I was wearing a well dodgy very bright yellow T shirt ( it was cool at the time...... I think ) just left of the goal near the front in the highlights if they still exist. Proud of that moment I was!

Fat Tony Kelly was seriously talented but, as we saw, carried a bit too much weight. he was best in winter because in them days the pitches were heavy so the whole game being slowed down suited him a bit more.

Scored a Van Basten like volley at Shrewsbury in a 3-0 win when any win at Shrewsbury was as rare as rocking horse shit.
Very good player for us who was brilliant in the unbeaten run under Mills when we were hammering teams for fun.

Fordy was great. That volley at Shrewsbury was immense. Mills hung him out to dry at centre back, we played Millwall at home and he was up against Sheringham and Cascarino and he had a stinker. Think that was the end of that experiment. Remember when he was sent off for a bad tackle at West Brom in the 6-0. Was totally out of character for him and couldn't believe he'd done it. Think he was living in Woore for a while and I saw him shopping in Newcastle long after he'd left. Real Stoke City hero for me.

Got himself sent off at the Hawthorns during the 6-0 defeat there (5:20 on the video) and signed for them three months later.
Wonder if he apologised to the West Brom player?!

My memory plays up as you know mate but I’m sure he signed the following week and that was his last appearance for us? You’ll be right no doubt 😊

Unless we've both got the same duff info from the same duff place.
