With Stoke City FC apparently in the grip of an early Summer shutdown I got bored and started searching for further amusement. I noted that West Ham have signed a new young Spanish midfield star, Pablo Fornals from Villareal for £25m. So the Hammers not only continue to survive in the Premiership, being fairly comfortable in mid table, but are up to their old tricks with "ambitious" signings. I got to thinking that if it wasn't for complacency and a dramatic decline it should still be us in that mid table Premier League spot spending out millions and investing in the clubs future, whereas we are instead contemplating a fairly uncertain and perhaps dismal season.
Then I was comforted by the fact that, as someone reminded me, despite their crowing and self publicity, they are not that big a club, they have not in fact ever won the top tier Champions title and were in the Championship as recently as 2012. Hopefully what goes around comes around.

In fact quite possibly the first British team to win a European trophy. Average attendance 50k plus - and even at the Boleyn it must have been routinely 35k plus. A huge list of top (really top) ex players. Yep, they must look at us and think: "Yeah it's OK. But if only we were SCFC".

Well somebody has to be.
Unfortunately a West Ham or an Everton is what we must realistically aspire to be. I just detest West Ham.

Happy Now?
Wet Sham is of course commonly accepted by most Oatcake posters as a term of derision.

They are a big club to a smaller club like us but in the grand scheme of things they really aren't a big club I hadn't forgotten a world cup. How could I? You are right. Pretty much everything in life is relative. And therefore suggesting that West Ham are "not that big" would be a bit like straying on to the Barnsley forum, and seeing a comment pointing out that Stoke are "not that big". To the extent that size can ever be objectively measured (ooohhh matron) the fact is that WHU are, against every reasonable measure, much, much bigger than us.

The fact that I had forgotten that is rather worrying (for me). Slightly less worrying than shouting at trees, or finding the advert for black incontinence underwear diverting. But worrying nevertheless. Now, where did matron put my pills..?
