It's always been my understanding that it was more Rory not wanting to coach Liam rather than the other way round, from a perfectly understandable (maybe commendable) desire not to interfere and smother the lad and his development. I'd swear I've read a direct quote from Rory to that effect but can't find anything on the old Google machine. Anyway if there's any chance of doing it I'd hope it could be worked round. Liam looks like a beast of a forward - very Haaland-esque (with the apt parallel of also having a decent but more limited midfielder father) It’s patantly obvious we’re lacking strikers this would be a perfect opportunity to get us one at a cheap short term price. It’d be devestating if he went to Derby and tore it up. Can you imagine a 4 of ..................Delap................... Clarke.......Powell...Campbell Sexy

Unfortunately, it will never happen.

With Doughty in the mix too.....
Would be annoying if we missed out, but I'm sure I've heard about Rory's reluctance to work with him either in the Sentinel/Radio Stoke - and that being one of the reasons he was more open to leave Derby when Stoke approached him, as it coincided with Liam's move into his age group
Hopefully it'll be one Rory can work around - but I've always thought having to coach your son would be a bit weird.
But it wouldn't be as awks as when Brian Clough used to refer to Nigel as "the number 9"

Get rid of senior delap so we can get junior delap. Is that an option? ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/800541/images/kwfoKwtHI0jglJZ4qZf6.gif)

Abigails on King Street. Very nice in there, so I've been told by a pal of mine, especially the room with the mirrored ceiling... Didn't your hybrid car get clamped there? 14 times No. I had a parking pass. Err I mean my mate had a parking pass.

As a matter of interest, what exactly are Rory's responsibilities with the first team? Is he a general coach or does he specialise in midfield, for example. With his son being a striker, it is quite possible that Rory would not be hugely involved in coaching him. Fingers crossed that this is the case.

Perhaps Rory could get in touch with Tony to see how he got a tune out of Little Ant?

Would love this. Delap, Fletcher, Campbell, Clarke and Doughty would be a serious pool of players to pick from, staying strong even with a few injury setbacks. I'd guess Rory's problem as a youth coach would be picking the team and having to drop him from time to time, hopefully that's not an issue with MON taking full responsibility for team selection? Fingers crossed.

However, as someone above has commented, in first team training it is MON who makes the decisions as to who gets picked to start the next game so Liam's presence in the squad would not be too difficult for Rory (or Liam) to manage as regards their relationship. With Fletcher having inevitable fitness concerns as he gets older, he and Liam would be very much a dream pair of options as regards leading the line.

Tough one for Rory. I can definitely see the argument for him not wanting his son at the same club. As much as I'd like to think I could separate the two, I think I'd find it impossible to switch off 'dad mode' if it was me.
On the other hand, if he goes to another championship club and tears it up then we've missed out big time and potentially handed one of our rivals a foot up.

He's already notched in their Youth Cup game. It helps to be surrounded by the other best young players in the country - but he is a machine!

Idle journalism by connecting him with us and Derby because of Rory. If any of the 3 it'll be Bournemouth with us 3rd I'm afraid. Rory has said repeatedly they'll never work together.

That seems like abit of a stubborn position for someone to take. Surely you'd want your son to have the best opportunity he could. I'm not suggesting that's Stoke of course but to completely rule it out seems weird.

Aquote in the Irish Independent the other day from Rory stating that he never interferes in anything Liam decides to do, including who to represent at international level as he has allegedly been asked to represent ROI but is some red tape due to new regulations.

We make a lot of sense - relatively big club, good (on paper at least) squad, very well regarded manager who works well with young players, guaranteed starts, local etc. Also given he’s Rory’s son the fans will be fully behind him from day one and he’ll be familiar with the club, which has to help.

The club is organised quite differently so, with MON at the helm, maybe Rory has a different perspective on things now An interesting comment from Tyrese in his midweek interview where he said that coming to Stoke was a no brainier- he would have the opportunity to play in different systems and positions - at Man City they play to one system ( albeit very successfully) If MON and his players really believe that we can make at least the play offs next season, we are a good prospect He persuaded Tyrese to stay ( probably his best signing to date) integrated him and Collins into the first team squad, gave them the chances to play and he has proved that they deserve to be in the starting 11

All the young players signed up which is credit to MON. just read the Independent article again and to be fair Rory was talking more re international football re not influencing Liam in any way but someone made a good point of how the fans would obviously take to him straight away but who knows what would influence him to join a certain club. He obviously knows Derby well
