As a kid I used to go catching pigeons out of disused buildings with a mate of mine. He loved’em. I didn’t get it. $#!ting things, but I liked the hunt for them. We were only about 10. Poor kids these days will have no such memories... There must be folk on here with pigeon fancying credentials. Remember, the Queen is a fancier...

Did something similar only a few years ago working on the narrow gauge railway in Wales. Difference being it was barn owls in an old disused farmers house halfway up the valley. Took pictures but left them well alone.

The better off have probably not done it either.

Not worth catching.
Hardly any meat on them
Although the breasts can be fried in butter which are quite nice but very small

Remember, the Queen is a fancier... brought up with racing pigeons as a kid raced them with my brother Kept them on my own when I got married until the ex went Abbo (walkabout ) left me with the four kids Restarted three years ago racing north road into Norfolk Best thing I ever did was restart Has given me a reason to get up in the mornings and allowed me to reduce some of my medications Fully recommend it as a hobby / sport for people with a garden and a bit of time

Hobby’s will be left behind in the 21st century as people just stare at their phones. Like me now.

Loved racing pigeons in north staffs was a club chair and secretary great hobby but has become a bit more expensive recently !! for those interested get in touch with the RPRA and they will put you in touch with your local club where members would be only too welcome to help you even may give you some pigeons or even you might be able to help an older member continue in the sport and gain valuable knowledge from them link to RPRAOh and did you see the new record for a pigeon 'Lewis Hamilton of pigeons' sold for world record €1.25m Racing pigeon Armando goes for huge sum after bidding war between Chinese enthusiasts link

Big commotion out the front of the house on a Friday afternoon about a year ago and our batshit crazy neighbor/drug dealer/Walter Mitty is chasing a pure white pigeon around our houses using the trusted catching method of running at it as fast he can while yelling at the top of his voice and waving his arms around.
Satdee morning we go out and, with little fuss Mrs Md catches said bird (lots of experience in her ‘practice’ marriage with parrots and conures and such) He has a band but it is totally unreadable. We do animal control and the police and get in touch with all the local shelters. In the meantime her indoors has read that a) if it’s a homer then they kill them cos it didn’t home (to be fair it is on the tin) or b) it’s been released at a local wedding and will probably be sparrow hawk kibble.
Now, and don’t jump ahead of me here, some of you may have realized I am about to become a pigeon owner.
Some years ago two rescue budgies were brought into work where our delightful doddering stage door woman was going to have them in her retirement home. Turns out she was horribly, horribly allergic so I said I would take them for a couple of days whilst that was sorted out.....so you can guess where that ends, we already had a couple of birds.
Anyhow, and I had no idea, he is ace. You can see why they are used by magicians. They are bright, fun and have some real character to them. We rescued and domesticated a feral cat a while ago and the two of them are big buddies. If the cat oversteps the mark pidge tells him all about it. Sunday’s is flyday where he gets the full run of a room to fly free and to have his bath and he always know what day it is.
When we get to retire and move South for the weather we really want a pool/lanai area where we can have some good flying space. Already did a bit of Florida where there was a regular heron who loved to hang out in the pool.
