In the 18th Cent people where born, raised, married & buried in their village. People sang from the same hymn sheet & everyone knew everyone else’s business. Come the industrial revolution, the lessening of agrarian life & the growth of urbanism, people were able to reinvent themselves & as time went on were able to achieve a level of anonymity. With the technical revolution we all subscribe to the same internet & display ourselves to a greater or lesser extent. The millennials freely expose themselves & the algorithms of search engines guide us to our favourite topics & stick us in a bubble. Our phones are probably listening to us & know what we want before we even type into search. Surveillance cameras follow you wherever you go & them dashcams record us all. If arrested the 1st thing the police do is take your phone as a record of what you’ve been doing & where you’ve been. We no longer have anonymity & are less likely to do and think individual stuff. We have become a global village...

I often think that our technological developments have outstripped our evolution. We did not evolve to communicate and cooperate in harmony with billions of other people. We are adapted to live in small, strong communities (tribes?) where there is a strict social code, in-group loyalty and a healthy hostility towards, or at least suspicion of, outsiders, but where interaction is face-to-face, respectful, and, well, human. Look at the ways people interact with each other online now. Civility and respect are so often thrown straight out of the window.
More bluntly, the internet will be the ruin of humanity.
PS congratulations on your 12,000th post bath.

Thanks. Fel pointed it out to me the other day that I was on 11,999. So I thought I’d better not commemorate it with my usual expletive!

Leotard in the late 80's or early 90's predicted we were no longer human but tele-human as we now communicate at distance
We are evolving and customs and old ways will disappear like never before. Instead of change taking 5 or ten generations it will take a few.
Pubs are almost dying out. They will be replaced by hash bars and in a few generations alcohol will be a minority drug.
In the last few generations industrial manufacturing has been out-sourced to the third world. Most jobs will be service driven.
There will always be a need for skilled and unskilled workers, though less than now. It will be the middle-class who suffer: solicitors, doctors, lecturers, therapists will be replaced by AI and provide quicker more accurate services.
In 25 years the world we see today will be barely recognisable - 50 and it will seem a foreign land

I can only go off experience and what I see really. And as for pubs shutting down, I think for every old, traditional pub closing, you’ve got three more trendy bars opening. The drinking culture isn’t changing in my opinion, just where the drinks are consumed.

It also seems to me that in the village mode, people are entrenched in their global village mentality, because our bubbles allow us to maintain a birds flocking together mentality, rather than evolving our thoughts. Pre technological revolution, people could have left their physical village to go to university, find work, love & this would have forced us to make the uncomfortable journey of leaving our comfort zone, making new friends & so broadening our horizons. Wherever we go we take our babbling bubble friends with us & so nullify the purpose of education, experience, FFS even making the beast with two backs has been corrupted, cause porn has taken away any imagination needed when every taste has been categorised(not that I’d know) Unless we make the conscious decision to leave the phone at home & go offline, even if we go abroad we can’t get away from our virtual bubble friends. Tech is reenforcing the Curse of Babylon.

Alcohol is here to stay. Modern life is that stressful that for many it's an essential. I'm a single man with no kids and I can honestly say, if I'm having a shite day at work, it's the thought of that first pint that gets me through it (and the second, and the third 😁😁😁)
