One of my all-time favourite sci-fi movies. Have had it on DVD for ages, but just recently noticed the Blu-ray in Poundland and seeing as how I'm currently in the process of replacing all my decent movies on DVD to HD it seemed silly not to grab it, especially for a quid. One thing you instantly notice is the sheer level of detail of the gore that you simply don't see on the DVD.

It's a great movie, theres also been talk of a reboot which could be good but I'd like it to go darker and less satirical. The cgi has stood the test of time on the bugs really well, the space ships cgi perhaps not so well. Just like the first Jurassic Parks TRex scenes, it's hard to spot the joins between the bugs animatronic fx and the digital fx. I think the 3rd movie to be fair wasnt too bad watchable at least.
Regards Poledouris yes it's a great score but this is still the masterpiece for me

Another thing, it got me in the movies, how the bugs were able to send asteroids to earth when they were light years away. We might have had warp drive technology but it's never explained how the bugs could fire the asteroids at us at a speed that could cross the distance in a feasible time?!

I read the book in my younger days and remember being quite disappointed in the movie when it came out, especially the mobile infantry's suit/armor, etc. The book could use a re-read as an adult since I imagine I'd grasp the political aspects of it much better. I've liked most of Heinlein's work with a few exceptions.

I've liked most of Heinlein's work with a few exceptions. Same here, although I re-read it recently. I'm a big Heinlein fan & although it's far from his best work, in my opinion, it was still very good.
The film misses a lot of the subtleties from the book. But then it was played very much for a wham-bam-take that bugs aspect & works well at that.
