Indeed, I suspect there are a fair few Republicans who see this as an opportunity to free the party from his taint once and for all. And possibly prevent his offspring/in-laws from future election, by association. Or maybe they've always thought he was a dick and just tolerated him while they had too? He's done a good job of being seen as worst president ever, I reckon. Quite the achievement when you consider the candidates!

I’m watching this now on CNN but really struggling to understand how it works. They’ve got a proper strange voting system in operation

It's a get out of jail free for McConnell. Convicting Trump gets Trump out of the Republican Party and by "being strong" he can rehabilitate the party and reframe the narrative to say that his party did the right thing. This will then set things up for Harris vs Haley in 2024.

Impeachment of Trump is the dumbest thing the Democrats have done in quite some time. Can they not see what pouring fuel on a fire does? Do it and watch what happens.

You've still got 75 odd million voters who bought into Trump, and not the no mark Republicans trying to impeach him to save face. Watch what happens. This will be a total disaster and the unrest will be taken to a new level. Humans, particularly Americans, can be so fucking dumb.

It's telling that despite them being so dumb the Republicans couldn't find a candidate to beat their best man. How low has the Republicans Party sunk?

As for Impeachment (again), it's far from straight forward one way or the other. For as many reasons for it, there are just as many against. One thing is for sure though, just hoping that Trump will simply go away is nonsense. The Republicans do not want Trump as he blows holes in what Republicans stand for and impeachment is the only way to stop him from standing again. The spectre of Trump making a bid for President in 2024 will mean that he will be able to play king maker, an impeached and convicted Trump will reduce him to a still powerful and influential player, but ultimately a man on the sidelines.

Biden got the job done and in the end it wasn't even that close. Inspiring or not, he won - which is what was being asked of him. I don't find him particularly inspiring, but that sheer number of votes he got suggest some people did - especially when you consider everything Trump did to stop people voting in Democrat-leaning areas. As you say, the impeachment process isn't straightforward but didn't the Democrats try and avoid this by trying to get Pence to enact Amendment 25? The best result for both parties would probably be that a whole mound of illegal, dodgy or corrupt shit is unearthed about Trump once he is out of office. It gives the Democrats a stick to beat the Republicans with, and the Republicans an excuse to bar him from standing 2024.

Biden's vote tally was prompted largely by the same driver as Trumps was last time around - anyone but Hillary, anyone but Trump. "The best result for both parties would probably be that a whole mound of illegal, dodgy or corrupt shit is unearthed about Trump once he is out of office." I think that's coming next - watch for more focus on his tax returns and dodgy business dealings now he's no longer got the sanctuary of office to hide behind.

He should know where it leads, if anyone. Some might say such comparisons show significant disregard for a subject that many want to disregard as insignificant. These constant comparisons between Hitler and Trump and are an absolute insult to what happened in 1938 onwards in my opinion. People keep willing Trump to be some kind of Hitler esc killer but its not the case and never will be the case. It's pretty hysterical how those that are so quick to jump on the Nazi bandwagon for Trump yet dismiss scenes in the summer where entire towns were looted and up in flames as "racial justice" 😂 This madness on both sides has to stop.

I don't understand how standing for a party works in the US, for instance Bernie Sanders is not even a Democrat yet twice tried to get himself on the ticket. I wonder if anyone can stand for any party, then they simply get votes in Caucuses and Primaries?

I know a party who got a landslide by getting little over two in every five votes cast and less than 30% of the electorate as a whole just over a year back. Landslides come in all shapes and sizes don't they?!
