Apple, Google and Amazon have dropped Parler from their platforms. But, as noted above, this means they are now admitting (at least some) liability for what goes on their platforms. That will make their previous defence of not having responsibility a little harder to sustain. It's total bollocks and to my cynical mind has much more to do with restriction of competition than anything else. As you say, these platforms are arguing against their position up until this point and they will have to change drastically. It's hypocritical nonsense. Could it be... they’re sucking up (or trying to) to Biden and the Democrats who have had the lax regulation of social media in their sights for some time. If so, they might just have pissed on their own chips.

I'm sure once they've been the good boys long enough to kill the competition there will be some pretty hard lobbying going on.

Social media have just opened the door to being responsible for members output which is of course the last thing they wanted to happen as will no longer be able to profit from stoking controversy on both sides. They only way out for them as far as I can see is to go down the route previously mentioned on here and make individual users accountable for what they "self publish" on social media including this forum.
If true, the golden age of free speech on the internet is over and as usual, it's people that have fucked it up again.

I see a new era of censorship and litigation as I think we are heading for more tightly defined rules and laws over what kind of things can be said or not said.

Interesting point by Simon Tisdall in today’s Observer “Trump is lucky he does not live in a country less wedded to the democratic laws he himself so readily breaks. Republican congressman Mike Gallagher accused him of “banana republic crap”. He has a point. In some parts of the world, Trump would be shot out of hand for sedition.”

Do get a grip, old chap. I rather think the point is that, in less stable democracies, Trump would have been imprisoned or executed out of hand by continuing to whip up opposition to the election result. If not before, then certainly after last week’s faux-putsch.

I still don't understand too why the writer suggests that Trump broke the law.

It’s disturbing to see some people more concerned with Trump being silenced on Twitter than they were about him trying to silence millions of voters in Pennsylvania and Georgia.

I would be just as concerned if they were trying to silence Clinton, Obama or Biden. But still not concerned about the attempted silencing of voters? Obama, Biden and Clinton haven’t used Twitter to incite terrorists to try and overthrow the US Government, and haven’t led an armed insurrection attempt - unless I missed something and you can show otherwise.

Silencing of voters ? Their you go again making false claims about Trump. What part of his speech before the protest headed up to capitol hill where he clearly said we are going to March in peace ? You need that TDS looking at.

I was wondering about all the different flags that were on display. When Trump said I love you all to the "protesters" I'm sure he meant to exclude these folks. Having said that, I'm sure there were good people amongst the Neo-Nazis and fruitloops. CNN, so obviously fake.

And by “fake news”, what they really mean is “suspend all belief in reality and deny what you’ve seen with your own eyes”. The only real source for truth is Trump’s Twitter feed, and since that’s now gone, nothing is real except that which the radical right wing media chooses to feed you. The good news is that many people are being identified and arrested after displaying their silly flags and paramilitary insignia on their “uniforms”. They certainly my made it easy for law enforcement to round them up for their fun day out doing treason and terrorism.

The videos that are coming out after the storming of the Capitol building make things worse, and worse...
The fact that Trump never even checked on Pence. More consumed with trying to stop the election confirmation than stop a riot.
This is just beyond words...

Trump doesn't give a shit about you. He doesn't care about his VP. Why would he care about his minions doing his dirty work?
