Still think that even from the distance of 41 years that it still ranks as our most miserable exit from the FA Cup although there are other contenders , of course
The time line is slightly out of kilter in what happened next , but to think positively about our present plight we were rescued in 1978 by a young Welsh manager who made some prudent signings and we were promoted back to the top division the next season.
Ah well, hope springs eternal

Agree that was the worst, but presumably before a lot of current posters were born. We didnt spunk a two goal lead in that one either, just the one, with ten minutes to go.

The mere mention of Blyth Spartans still sends a shudder down my spine.
A shattering result for a then 14 year old boy who, despite relegation and the Butler St fire sale, still "believed".
I reckon that was the day the "child" in me died and started me off on the road to becoming the cynical, sardonic old(ish) man I am today.
It means I can handle results like yesterday with a "been there, done it" grimace.
But, as you say, let's hope for a repeat of history; promotion and a cracking team. (So long as that repeat of history stops sometime before our manager attends a ground breaking football tactics conference!)

We seem to have a thing about Shropshire clubs as well. Remind me someone when were knocked out of a cup competition by Telford United ?

Those days should be part of a long ago history after the promised land, but I think I always knew they'd be back.
What really gives me stress & despair is that we are going to create new list of shocking memories for next few years.
Losing at home to Shrewsbury after being 2-0 up with 20 minutes to go. League One Shrewsbury who lost at home to Charlton at the weekend 0-3!
We defo won't be creating any positive memories this season & I wonder how long till we do?

I was comparing last night with Blythe Spartans defeat this morning , I think the Blythe one hurt more, and made the sports headlines at the time. This one is nearing that calamity but in this one we were in the next round with 20 mins to go- cue the self destruct button. All these mini disasters are best out of the woodwork now so the manager is well aware of his squads fraillties and can tackle them early on

I was a pimple faced idealistic 16yr old teenager. I was devastated. It still is a vivid memory. Especially scarves and ripped season tickets being thrown and some left on the pitch at the end of the game.
Fast forward 41 years my missus asked aren't you going to follow the game on the Radio. I replied they will fuck it up so what's the point. Went online and saw the result and shrugged my shoulders and laughed.
That's what getting old and supporting Stoke for 45 years (first game at 13) does to you.

I was there that night against Blythe Spartans and remember it well - unbelievable to see us lose that game.
I didn't go last night and couldn't be bothered to listen either as somehow I just knew we'd lose. I followed the game from the comments on the Oatie.
Stoke somehow always manage to let us down don't they ?

At the time though, also aged 16, was just very, very angry! We beat Tilbury 4 - 0 previous round and were not that impressive against them! So promotion, next season, it is then!

I was a 12 year old lad in the Butler Street stand that night that went home gutted by that result. I’ve got used to now though.
When we ran out in yellow shirts you just knew it would be a strange night 😂

I also remember it well, walking back to my car over the canal bridge looking down the water was full of scarfs, hats, shirts, one of the lowest moments of my life

I had to go into school in Penkridge afterwards and face the rest of my class, who were wolves supporters to a man. It was a nightmare.
These days it matters less, both to me and to work mates. Nobody mentioned it.

Walsall in 66..........Bloody hell. Take a bow Bobby Irvine Funny what you remember. I was on the Boothen for that game, right behind the goal. Before the kick off, a hole was found in the goal netting. Two walsall players tied up the hole, and in doing so, made a W in that part of the netting. I remember booing them for that lol.

I was thinking back to that day. I was 15 & I remember all the feelings of utter anger, upset, shame & despair. I'd been encouraged to be a Stoke supporter aged 5 when Gordon Banks signed for us. Since that 'happy' day I often wondered who I'd be supporting if that didn't happen.
Sitting here longer, I have been wondering what's the average age of members?
Because if most ,as is the case on this post, are my age or older, then you must have suffered for over 50 years like I have.
So back to my usual moan, how the hell can you not love Tony Pulis (other than the very brief success of Tony Waddington in our life-times) who brought us at least the chance of success & limited embarrassment. Though he did often throw away cup games.

And why did we wear that yellow kit. I remember our players being booed by the Boothen End as they emerged first. Then there was a stunned silence as folk realised it was our team.
To start with I thought their team had a Howard Kendall doppelgänger.

I still remember that bald bloke they had playing for them - we ripped into him but he had the last laugh on the night.
