Thing is, he's going to cop more flack for lying with his excuse, than the original salute.
He should have just come out and said it was a poor attempt at humour and apologise for any offence caused, whilst possibly mentioning John Cleese, to deflect a bit of attention off himself.

I'm offended by someone else being offended on behalf of the person who may actually get offended, who turns out isn't offended at all.

The photographer is German I believe. Most likely it’s some sort of dark-humoured banter between Hennessey and the other player. It’s 2019 though and the radical left, coupled with the state and certain sections of the media, are in the process of criminalising free speech.
Whether a joke is funny or not, or offensive or not (which is subjective anyway) is irrelevant. There’s a clear distinction between a joke and an actual political affiliation, but we’re at a point where those distinctions are being ignored, wilfully or otherwise, by people who are politically motivated to blur the lines. Shades of the disgraceful and terrifying Count Dankula case here.

There was one of Brian little 'saluting' the villa fans from the steps at the back of the holt end.
It was used as the front cover picture on their fanzine.
I don't remember it making the papers, but then again I haven't bought a paper for over forty years.

"Not proven": www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/47824250The screenshot in the article is superb. The clip above didn't include this: Thanks to Wayne Hennessey for reminding me of that absolute genius of an episode.

The funny thing is that the children of those who went to war to fight nazism would think nothing of making the nazi salute in jest, and no one seemed to be too offended by it at the time. The further away in time we've got from it, the more offended we're told to be.

I agree entirely - why couldn't he just admit he was being a dick and trying to be funny instead of fabricating a bizarre story. In the right context the Nazi salute is hilarious!
