He wasn't in Rowett's one either. The succession planning is in full swing. This is John's club to run now.

Maybe so, I swear in his short interview yesterday he said he spoke to John and Peter though - so there is still some life in the old boy yet.

Peter Coates turns 81 at the end of the week. Maybe he just doesn't fancy standing around outside Clayton Woods on a cold winter morning posing for photographs with the media team? I'm sure there is a transition plan unfolding where John currently greater say in things, but I wouldn't read too much into Peter not being in the photos as much recently.

www.stokesentinel.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/live-stoke-city-nathan-jones-2412678How did it happen? NJ: To say it’s a whirlwhind is an understatement. I got a call early in the week and it all happened very quickly. I was actually in Brighton with my fiancee but travelled up, met the board, spoke to Tony (Scholes) and it was something I was interested in and here we are. Was it an easy decision? Absolutely not. We were in a good place at Luton, which is a wonderful, wonderful club. When it happens, you just have to think professionally. It’s a real wrench and it would have taken something special. I had other opportunities to leave the club but when Peter, John and Tony explained the vision for me it became the right decision for me, but not an easy one.

www.stokesentinel.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/live-stoke-city-nathan-jones-2412678What was the Stoke City vision?NJ: It’s a great club. Look, I’ve followed football for a long time. There’s a good tradition of Welsh managers here and I hope that continues! I was at Brighton, which was a real community club, which had good people throughout. It’s the same here, very community driven, the fans are superb. It’s been a tough couple of years without being disrespectful to anyone but they’d previously had a wonderful 12 years with Tony and everyone. Everything is in place here to do wonderfully well. Fans are key to any success and they have to buy into it. The people around here can make this a phenomenal club. Are you confident this squad can play your open, attacking style?NJ: I hope it won’t be that open! I’m very confident. I felt this was the right fit. I didn’t want to really start again. There are so many good things in place. with wonderful footballers so as long as the players buy into what we do... I don’t just want to be a passing side, I want to be hard-working and winning. I want the fans to be proud of the side. I want the club to get back to the highest level and I believe we will.

www.stokesentinel.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/live-stoke-city-nathan-jones-2412678How big a challenge will it be taking on this changing room?NJ: I’ve seen no egos, absolutely not one. That goes from the hotel staff where I’m staying to the people at the club. The best way for me to bridge a gap between lower league football and where these are now is to do good work. I’m very proud of the work me and my staff do. The players buy into everything. They are good at heart, real good characters here. I’ve seen today it’s a hard-working group that want to play football. What are your immediate targets?NJ: The greatest pressure I will be under is from myself. The gap isn’t sizeable if I’m honest. What we have to do is instil a philosophy, environment and culture that takes the club forward in the long-term. I want short-term success that takes us into that. I have my own targets so if I implement what we do we can go to certain places in a certain amount of time. January transfer windowNJ: Anyone we bring in has to be better than what we have here. We’ve got a wonderful squad so anyone has to improve the environment, be an athlete and the right character. Anyone who doesn’t want to be part of this environment will quickly fall by the wayside. There won’t be masses of movement because I don’t think we need a lot but I want to keep this group motivated, fit and hungry. What's your coaching philosophy?NJ: Fast, winning football but also discipline, respect, talent in a system and a structure. It’s not rocket science, it’s based around hard work. What can Stoke achieve this season?NJ: I’d like to say anything. I am a student of the Championship. The realistic aim is to improve our position quickly, then going into months, significantly improve it. If we can improve our position by the end of every month hopefully we should be in a very good place. I’m not going to give anyone a headline! I’m going to move the club forward with our philosophy. What's your message to Luton fans?NJ: I had a great rapport with fans of Luton. I gave them everything, gave them my life. I think I significantly improved the whole football club, the environment, the playing style, the assets. I united the club, it’s a full house every week. I couldn’t have left it in a better position. The amount of times I’ve cried from text messages from players already... I was married to the club but this is a natural progression for me. The right step. I hope they understand. I don’t think I’ve left them in the lurch. We were 18th in League Two when I started, now they’re one of the most exciting young teams in any division. They’ve scored more goals than pretty much everyone other than Man City...

www.stokesentinel.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/live-stoke-city-nathan-jones-2412678What's your message to Stoke fans?NJ: I want to put a side out there to be proud of. I want them to buy into that. We are going to have go through trials and there might be an element of frustration but down the line they will be proud of this team. So I say, get behind us now and buy into it. I’ve had hidings here. I’ve marked players like Sidibe here and listened to Delilah four times in a match. I know how much influence they can have. How was training this morning?NJ: Understandably they’ve been very motivated today but I said afterwards that wasn’t the peak. I’m used to a talented squad but that was very different, I’m very pleased. How much impact at Brentford?NJ: I will tap into the knowledge of people at the club, like Rory Delap, who knows the players and is a great character, but I want to get started as soon as possible. I’m not one of those managers who will sit in the stands and ease myself in. We need every point, why not start on Saturday? It’s been a real whirlwind but being a football manager is never plain sailing. Team newsNJ: There’s one or two things I wouldn’t like to say openly. The numbers trained today with good intensity. The board have backed you to bring in back room staffNJ: To implement a club philosophy, not just coaching, you need people you can trust. There are great people here who can improve and it’s essential that my core staff came and the club recognised that. I don’t travel with loads of baggage but there are a few who are essential to how we operate. Sometimes management can be a lonely place, staying in a hotel with you, your dog and your fiancee, so I’m grateful. What role for fans?NJ: I want fans to understand how we’re going to play, they’re going to have to understand the process. But I promise, they will have a team to be proud of. We educate players, work with players, put them into a structure they can be proud of. Will you bring forgotten players back into the fold?NJ: Of course. I don’t like saying clean slate because it’s not quite that but I will give everyone an opportunity. If they buy into what we’re doing, they’ll improve and the whole club will improve. We have a certain way of doing things and they’re good human beings here, not just footballers. I like young, fit athletic players and they’ll get an opportunity here. It’s brilliant for fans if they have young homegrown players to get behind. How will you handle pressure of a big club?NJ: The biggest amount of pressure is from myself. My ambition matches that of the club. I could have chosen far easier jobs for my first as manager than Luton Town. I’m used to having to win football matches and this is a big club in a division that is like the Premier League 2. That’s not pressure, it’s a challenge.

Can we all heed his words please, when asking for patience? It really is vitally important. It really is.
If we can see him implementing good things then he must be backed on the terraces in the short term at the very least.

Interesting comment about not saying a few things openly. A surprise or 2 maybe in his line up?. If I was Crouch, Adam and Fletcher I would be packing my bags now!!

Is Paul Hart not coming with Nathan. I thought his experience & knowledge would be useful. Always liked his philosophy and the calmness he exuded. Would be a good foil for our new boss.
