Cliff bastard Richard at Blackpool Opera House last night. Took my mum for her 70th. It was like a social services lost and found. I’m 50 and was by far the youngest person there. I could feel the eyes of elderly women all over me, desperate for a peek of my long johns. I made the mistake of taking her out for an Italian beforehand, and as I have a very distinguished hair colour and a captain birdseye beard, I could tell people in the restaurant (all possible cast members of cocoon) were looking at me think ‘son or lover?’. Put me off my tagliatelle. Cliff, to be fair was fucking great for 83. As I was brought up listening to his albums stacked up on the record player when my mum did housework, to my eternal shame I found I knew 80% of his set off by heart, and to be fair he does have a couple of absolute bangers. Mum asked me to look out tickets next time he tours. I didn’t have the heart to tell her that at least one of them won’t be making it. Never knew Miss Kitty was still doing gigs.

Grace at The Waddington Suite last night.... simply brilliant. Is that Grace the local band who were around forever ago? Christ what a blast from the past that is if so. Saw them somewhere like the Merlin or Bar X about 30 years ago.

Weller at the Victoria Hall again next April. Hopefully not with a new record out so he can treat us to his earlier back catalogue 🙏

Denise Van Outen was DJ’ing (somewhat bizarrely) at an event I was at a couple of months back. Still looking superb

Cigarettes After Sex, Manchester O2.
My missus is more of a fan than me but it was an excellent gig.

Unexpected night out at the Warehouse Project for Hacienda returns after scoring a cheap ticket. Way better than I was expecting, such a great space. Best was Kevin Saunderson worst was Ian Brown. Soul II Soul were great despite being 20 mins late, only doing 4 songs, one being a wonky cover of Nothing Compares 2 U.

Was supposed to see Ice Cube and Cypress Hill last night but our lad was ill so opted for Johnny Marr + Orchestra at Aviva Studios instead. Good gig, surprisingly busy, spoiled by people chatting throughout. Absolute twats.
Could be a decent venue with a few tweaks, such as a bloody phone signal. Can't argue at 4 quid for a pint of Amstel though.

Jah Wobble tonight at the foxlowe in leek
Great little venue
Wobble as charismatic as ever.
Played the metal box album in dub.
Started a bit slow but once up to speed it was a great little gig.
They were on for around 2 hours with no break.
Probably 60 people there.
Great stuff.

Just home from the refurbed Wolves Civic and a brilliant night seeing Geddy Lee on his book tour. 2 and a quarter hour show ,some superb memorabilia and an interview lead by Nicky Wire of Manics (hate them actually but he did well and clearly a big fan) then a journo Phil Wilding who has solid links with Rush lead second half and some audience Q&A. Not a cheap night but included copy of autobiography and a physical tour programme ( there's a relic of the past!) and had a great seat and view. Been a Rush fan for so many years so to see him happy and engaged was a pleasure

Saw the excellent Richard Dawson in Bristol tonight. Lovely, funny, self-effacing chap. Sang the great footy song Two Halves. Also there was snooker legend Steve Davis, who held the door open for me. He’s into his prog and Psych but I guess Dawson’s take on folk has elements of both. Here's Steve, shot from above in the bar: Attachment Deleted

Remember a great reply from DVO once, when she was being interviewed whilst she was going out with JK (Jamiroquai) ...
INTERVIEWER: "How on earth do you put up with JK being so continuously in your face all the time?"
DVO: "Same way as I put up with him cumming on my face all the time!"

Just booked tickets for Slipknots 25 year anniversary tour next December at the new Co-Op Live next to the Etihaad
Seating £80 (but why the fuck would you sit at a metal show?)
Standing £150.....must be mad.
Be a cracking show though, always are!

My last 3 gigs of the year:
Hannah Aldridge - agreed with pretzel on the previous page - a great gig. Also the most intimate venue of the year - it felt like being in someone's living room.
STRFKR - super fun dancing gig with probably the best sound I've heard at The Deaf Institute. Two slower songs were highlights including my all-timer Isabella of Castile, which sounded almost stratospheric.
Teenage Wrist - great sound from US alt rocker shoegazers, with my favourite track Dweeb being the clear highlight.
I missed out on tickets for Paul Weller in Hanley but did get Girls Aloud!
My next definite gig is Depeche Mode, for the first time since 2001.

Standing £150.....must be mad. Be a cracking show though, always are! I've sat through plenty of heavy shows because prices get ridiculous. For Rammstein I think it was about 400 for near-stage standing. Seats for 50ish second hand. For Megadeth/In Flames it was about 200 for both of us standing or buy one get one free seating for 30. Turns festivals into really good value.

Not gone to this tonight but for any other Rush fans, Geddy Lee has continued his book tour this week with guest interviewers like Melissa Auf Der Mar ( from Hole) , Phil jupitus in Glasgow and saved the best for Portsmouth tonight where he's been joined by Alex bloody Lifeson! Only London to go . All of these have been filmed so going to enjoy watching when I can over Xmas

Looking at festivals for next year's European holiday. Any bands stick out as great live shows? Still deciding between download, Alcatraz, summer breeze, wacken etc. Lots of bands from download this year should be going to 1+ of those.

Parkway Drive were really decent
The Euro circuit is mainly the same bands at Download, Hellfest (Fr), Graspop (Bel), Wacken (Ger - always looks ace!), Rock Im Park (Ger)
I nearly did Bloodstock in Derbyshire this year (Aug) to see Megadeth, Sepultura and one of my teens faves Helloween - much cheaper than Download to camp all weekend (and £70 day tickets) but does seem to cater for more black metal types. Helloween pulled out so I was glad I didnt go!

Also, Slam Dunk in Leeds has had a top punk lineup fpr the past few years, but I've heard mixed reviews of the venue and facilities - couldnt fault Download. Plenty of beer, food and water, although no merch left by Sunday!
Even the bogs werent too bad

Went to EMOM (Electronic Music Open Mike) at the Wharf Chambers in Leeds the Friday before Christmas. Basically anyone could turn up and play a 20 minute slot as long as they booked it beforehand. As you might expect, very wide range of acts, from Ibiza thumping anthem type stuff to the very avant garde. Highlights for me were a bloke dressed in a full zebra outfit putting out some really good dance tunes that got everyone up, and another bloke who had something resembling a police breathalyser that he rubbed around his beard to produce slinky sounds.
It was the perfect antidote to all of the festive mayhem in Leeds on Mad Friday.
So far, got tickets to see the Stranglers again in Halifax next year, plus hoping to catch Green Lung at the Brudenell Social Club in May.
