Why go to Villa ?
Doing great at Brentford, making a name for himself and real possibility to get them into Playoffs and possible automatic promotion
I know the Big club syndrome etc etc but it really could be another poisoned Chalice

The opportunity to manage one of the biggest clubs in the country doesn't come around too often so I would think that Dean Smith didn't take too long to make his mind up whether to go or not. Oh and he`s a villa fan as well apparently.

They must think in spite of all the evidence that Terry won't screw Smith over in some way.

They must think in spite of all the evidence that Terry won't screw Smith over in some way. If working with Terry wasn't Smith's idea this could go horribly wrong. And if it was Smith's idea you would have to question his sanity. Can't wait to see his face when the first journalist starts talking about John Terry's Aston Villa. When do they play Frank Lampard's Derby County?

The more pertinent question would be: Why wouldn't Dean Smith take the job? I don't get why folk would wonder.

Villa are a sleeping giant, a club that less than 10 years ago was pushing for a top 3 finish. Any manager in his right mind would jump at the opportunity to forge something there.

It'll be interesting to see if Brentford can recover from this blow. With their imminent move to a new stadium they seem to be a club on an upward curve, and would be an attractive proposition for an ambitious manager.

I'd mentioned on the other Villa thread, always a big gamble managing the club you support. It inevitability always goes horribly wrong at some point & whilst it would be great to achieve success at the club you grew up adoring, on the flip side, to get hounded out when things go wrong would be a horrible experience.
It's the same reason Denis Smith never took over the reigns of his beloved Stoke despite Coates discussing the idea with him.. Wise move I think on reflection, he gets enough grief of Stokies doing radio summarising nevermind if he'd ever been manager.

I think it's worse if you were already a legend as a player at the club, like Denis. Sure, if you're a fan it's going to hurt, but getting the sack is going to hurt wherever you are. At least there's no legacy to taint. You'd be mad to turn down an opportunity to manage a big club just because you grew up supporting them.

Yeah good point with regards to the fact Dean Smith hasn't got a playing legacy to taint. One good thing in Dean Smith's favour is he has risen through the league's as a manager & clearly learnt his trade.. Do still question how their backroom set ups going to work harmoniously with Terry & the sporting director being thrust upon him. Especially as I've just read his old Brentford Assistant is making the move to Villa Park too.

I wonder how tight the Woods deal is? Tighter than the purse strings at Galatasaray. He's ours. Good appointment for Villa. Smith has a good squad to work with there.

Potentially a great appointment, but you just wonder if it's slightly grudging because they wanted a big name.
Hamstringing him with Terry rather than letting him bring his own assistant in might not be too clever either.

Gary Rowett’s Stoke City doesn’t quite have the same ring does it? I think that's because it's Gary Rowett's STOKE CITY rather than FRANK LAMPARD'S Derby County, JOHN TERRY'S Aston Villa and STEVIE G'S Rangers. As it should be.

What a ridiculous question Why ? GD Oh come on it’s by far the biggest job the guy has ever been close to in thirty-odd years as a player or manager. You wouldn’t get one in a thousand people turning down Aston Villa to stay at bloody Brentford.
