Given this is the last season and I believe the intention is the final oatcake will be produced the first home game of next season (I think) are there any plans for a final swan song event or are you intending to go quietly into the night ?
it's been a part of so many stokies lives over many years it would be quite cool to do something to celebrate its demise

One final, massive OBPU at O'Learys, with all current Stoke players invited, along with Nello. And Kris Akabusi.

I'm having my own party! With blackjack! And hookers!
In fact, forget the party.
And the blackjack.

I reckon they should sacrifice IlfordDave on the main carpark prior to the game to appease the footballing god's?

I'm new to the messageboard yet have read from a distance for a few years but thought what the heck, nothing better to do after work and beats corrie with the missus. Yet The Oatcake fanzine has been a part of my Stoke City life for aslong as i can remember and to me and I'm sure many others is part of a pre match ritual that seems I must do before I enter block 22 on a Saturday or whichever block you enter on a Saturday folks. My old man has every issue to date and i have been buying them since my dad stopped letting me pinch his (true) and they will be passed down through generations to enjoy. So although the fanzine is to stop next year and with it a little bit of matchday magic to disappear it will bow out with mine, my old man's and I'm sure thousands of stokies thanks to Mr Smith, Mr Frith and everyone who has contributed over the years.

Might it be possible to host some of the fanzine content here on the message board?
I'm thinking about things like the editorial, the in depth technical/analytical pieces, some of the retrospective stuff, the cultural pieces and so on. The fanzine is beautifully written, it would be tragic to lose this. Of course whether the contributors would still be interested with no direct revenue stream I don't know.
This message board is perfectly fine for some knock about stuff but it is the fanzine which is quite literally charting the history of the football club.

Why have they decided to stop the fanzine? Is it because it's too much hassle for little profit these days ?

Why have they decided to stop the fanzine? Is it because it's too much hassle for little profit these days ? I imagine sales have reduced in recent years. Print has suffered since we've entered an online media world. Smudge has other commitments, such as writing for The Sentinel, so I imagine something had to give. All good things come to an end. It's a shame though but the fanzine doesn't put itself together.

I understand they've made so much money from it, they'll never have to work again and so their motivation has fallen off. I know Smudge finds its hard travelling in from his home in the Caicos Islands to Newcastle Instant Print to sign off each issue. Dave's cocaine habits and whoring have taken their toll.

It gets harder each year to keep burning the candle at both ends. And it’s time to accept the reality of the new age and the online world. Still proud of the 31 years and 654 (655 if you ever got our charity special) issues we’ll have completed by next August and happy to sign off at that point.

The Oatcake has been a part of my whole Stoke City supporting life. I buy it now out of support for what is a Stoke City institution but with 2 young kids who don't leave me alone even when I go to the toilet, I can't remember the last time I read it cover to cover. Having said that, when we were really shit, I'd have read it cover to cover before the game had even finished!

Still got my copy. I remember reading my "with chayze" on a long haul flight somewhere. I spent most of the flight actually laughing out loud and had several odd looks in the process as well as a very embarrassed wife who encouraged me to "shut up" more than once.

I bought an Oatie at every match I went to from its inception, obviously lessened since my ex-pat life started, but it was always a reassuring and pleasing experience to get your hands on it at every home game. If often lifted the gloom on the dark days, and added to my joy on the (much rarer) enjoyable matches to attend over those 31 years.
Dave, Smudge and the crew have done a wonderful job and the print version will be missed by many. Is there any thought to doing some online stuff from time to time?
I'd love to make an OBPU or similar, if in the country at the time.
Oh, and Smudge, let me know when you want me to close on that deal for that nice little villa on Grace Bay in Provo, Turks & Caicos! ;-)

I left the Potteries more than 40 years ago; but since its inception my brother would send me his copies on a regular basis. Barring the very occasional visit to a game, when I returned home, it was my only real link with my beloved team in the years before the internet.
