Saw it this afternoon. I thought I was prepared for it but I wasn't.
Genuinely terrifying and worth every bit of critical praise it's had.

Honestly, I couldn't sleep last night for replaying certain scenes in my head.
Go and see it, it's actually a very high quality film and I'd be surprised if it didn't sweep up with Oscar nominations. Toni Collette is outstanding.

Genuinely terrifying In that case I'm gonna give it a miss, 'Umph, considering that I screamed the place down at the Cinebowl in Hanley in c.1975 when that chap's (? Ben somebody?) head suddenly appeared in the hole in the side of the sunken boat in 'Jaws'. Still can't watch that bit.....

Is it gory or unsettling? There is one moment of gore but for the most part it fills you with dread from shot to shot. It's very clever.

I think horror films strive for that one iconic scene, the moment that audiences talk about for years to come. Hereditary has at least 3 of them!

You're right about the theory that 'a movie can have only one major scare moment', 'Umph - the following is from a pile of production info on Director Steven Spielberg observed at the first testing screening that the first surprise appearance of the shark got the biggest scream from the audience. However, after he re-shot the scene at Ben Gardner's boat, the surprise appearance of Ben Gardner's head got the biggest scream, while the appearance of the shark received half the reaction it used to. Spielberg said it taught him a lesson that a movie can have only one major scare moment, because afterward the audience will be on guard against the film. Sorry for inadvertently Jawsing-up the thread, btw. I'll stop now.

So to get the biggest shock moment from something else works a treat! I know I'm building Hereditary up here and I hope people aren't disappointed but I'm not lying when I say there is more than one of these moments. I read a review before that talked about a moment where you see something in the background and it will take a while to notice but when you do... It will make your skin crawl. I was expecting it and I thought it came in the first 20 minutes (I still shat myself). How wrong I was though. When it really came, I couldn't help but point at the screen and a girl sat behind my screamed.

Bloody loved it. Such good pacing and the mood is unsettling to the extreme

I think the thing that goes against this movie is the trailer, it was a fucking good trailer but it made it seem a lot more fast paced than it is, there was a row of dickhead students behind me at Odeon and they walked out and were calling it shit about 45 min in which pleased me greatly

I watch these sort of films all the time, have done for years and to date the only one that has really got me is Paranormal Activity 2 - more precisely the scene in the kitchen. A little bit of poo might of come out.

Ive just been on the Odean play list to see when showings of this are & was surprised to see that it only got 2.5 stars out of 5. What's you think of that...

As per gingerstokie’s comment, I think a lot of audiences members expected cheap thrills. As I’ve commented above, it’s got a big story at the heart of it as well with heavy themes at play.
