Chosen by the heads of state.
The head role is non-hereditary so is not automatically passed on when the Queen dies, with some suggestions it might rotate among the 53 leaders.
In a statement, the leaders said they "recognise the role of the Queen in championing the Commonwealth and its people".
Prime Minister Theresa May and Canadian PM Justin Trudeau had earlier given their backing to Prince Charles.
Speaking at a press conference marking the end of the summit, Mrs May praised the Queen for her "vision and duty" in growing the Commonwealth from eight members to 53.
She said it was "fitting" Prince Charles would succeed her due to his "proud support" of the Commonwealth "for more than four decades".

Yeah, like anyone gives a fuck! Amazing isn't it. Aside from the few monarchists in the country for whom the royal family seem to fill some weird kind of need to observe subservience, the rest of us genuinely couldn't give a shit. The contrasts in reporting on the royals which is almost overwhelmingly positive at all times compared to, say, Brexit, where there are accusations of bias and calls for investigations is incredible. I have nothing against them personally. They seem nice enough, if a bit dim and in-bred. However, I would like to see them cut off entirely from any position of influence and taxpayers' money. They can sell some of their £bns of assets, land etc. And if this means they diminish to become a European style irrelevance, great. £364 million to renovate Buckingham Palace while we have record numbers of rough sleepers and foodbank users. Fuck off!

Fuck off! Just imagine how much wealth they are sitting on....all on the back off scrounging off the state. Its the status they have been given by their servants (i.e. us) that has earned them wealth, nothing else.....that wealth should therefore be shared. They have not earned the right to anything, everything has been inherited through privilege. Let's get our money back now....it should be put in a public purse and we should have a referendum on how to spend it for the country's benefit. We could get rid now and tourists would still come to see where the Queen once lived do nothing lost really.

Buckingham Palace would make a fuck load more money if you kicked the residents out of their council house and allowed the fee-paying plebs to actually enter the grounds/house.

Most of them are so far detached from the reality. They’d have some credibility if the princes did a few years working in the real world as shelf stackers or check out assistants. Also how come they’ve all got the brains to go to high ranking public schools and universities and, if they go into the armed forces, it's never as a Stoker in the navy or a private in the Fusiliers. No it’s a fucking officer. Well it’s bollocks because a close friend instructed prince bonehead Andrew in basic engineering at HMS Sultan which is the RN Engineering school in Gosport. He still says he is astounded at his lack of understanding of anything to do with marine engineering. I know he was not a marine engineer but all RN officers, regardless of branch, have to do some acquaintance training in marine engineering in order to understand basic ship propulsion methods. The only ones I have any respect for are Harry who, lets face it, isn’t really royalty given his parentage. Prince Edward told his dad to fuck off I’m not staying in the marines and went to forge his own career out of the royal spotlight.

... maybe they actually raise the profile of the country that you live in. Whatever the outgoings are they are more than justified by the tourism earnings that are generated

I don't hate the Royals, I just don't like them being shoved down my throat. On balance, I'd vote to keep them as I view them as being better than having a President Blair, and they enhance "Brand UK". Now, the House of Lords is a very different matter...

The most staggering think about the Commonwealth conference is that in an hour long press conference, not one, not fucking one journalist in this country took the opportunity to ask May about the shame of Windrush.
What a pathetic fucking country we live in.

Fucking nepotism that's what it is, he's not the best man for the job.
Read up about prince Andrew and his good friend the sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, it's to say the least an eye opener.

Short answer - they don't, it's their 'position' which allows them direct entry into Oxford or Cambridge despite being average intelligence at best. One day we might actually wake up to this farce, but there's something about the English needing to know their place that makes me think otherwise.

The Palace of Versailles (unoccupied by royals since 1789) is the third most visited attraction in France, generating billions in tourism for Paris every year. People would still come. Cost of monarchy every year = £300million which doesn't include cost of policing or armed forces security, nor royal ceremonies or local government costs incurred during royal visits. Sovereign grant goes up about 7% every year. Inflation? Ordinary folks' pay rises? It amazes me the lack of scrutiny about this stuff from our media, when they will pore over anything else in minute detail. No wonder Brenda refers to them as The Firm, they're modern Untouchables! Good. Long live the Queen

Can you imagine the scrutiny, interest and outrage in the media and especially on here if someone with just five GCSEs and two poor A levels was handed an Oxford Uni place for being black or, heaven forbid, muslim!
Prince Charles? Welcome aboard, sir!

You don't have to have the head of the government as head of state. Separating the two is a good thing,no President Blair scenarios. However do what the Irish do and have an elected head of state.
