Very well spoken and honest when on the tv radio. Really good when with Alan Brazil.
A great player too

Always sad when someone like him goes well before their time - about 20 years too early - at least. One of the last true gentlemen in the game. Always seemed quite humble and knew his stuff as a pundit. One of the few on Talk Sport I had any time for - I'm a bit surprised the BBC didn't sign him on a long contract when Alan Hansen retired. Condolences to his friends and family - RIP Butch.

RIP to a really top football man. Also the record-holder for the career total of yards passed sideways.
Thanks for everything Ray, far too young. Love to those left behind.

Like Frank said-'I'm not sure they make them like Ray anymore.'
I couldn't have said it any better myself.
Former Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard: "Devastated to hear the news that Ray Wilkins has passed away. He was a great player and an even greater man. Full of kindness and humility, with impeccable manners at all times. He had respect and time for everyone and to me he was a mentor and a friend. I'm not sure they make them like Ray anymore. You will be sorely missed fella."

RIP Ray.
What most impresses me about this board is that every now and then it gives me a glimpse of what basically decent people you all are. Recent posts have contained language that you wouldn't want your children hearing and people trading the worst manner of insults possible (stress and worry about the current situation perhaps?).
But at times like this your behaviour and comment is laudable. Well done Stokies.

Extremely sad news and has sadly dies far too young at 61.
A great player who always gave 100% on the pitch and who was also very eloquent in his comments about the game. He was a true gent who never appeared to be the "look at me" type of ex-pro.
He will be sadly missed. Condolences to his family and friends.
RIP Butch.

I can only say as I find. Ray came to Walton on Thames FC for an amateur testimonial. Dragged a host of PL players from Cobham. Was gracious and interesting. I know he had his issues which are not insignificant. But he was a nice fella. RIP "the crab"

As a linesman I did a pre season friendly P Vale v Man U some years ago and Untd put out a strong team including Ray Wilkins who was then at the peak of his career.
I had a fair bit of stick off a ceartain player who’s name I won’t mention because I kept giving off side.
At the end of the game as I walked across the pitch THE RAY WILKINS came up to me and said “thank you very much linesman and well done.”
A true Gent and great footballer.

As a kid,his goal against Brighton seemed exotic, almost otherworldly (only the South Americans did that!) naive, but y'know...
Was ahead of his time, trying to educate the English game in the art of ball retention based on his learnings from the Italian football, but was reduced to almost a caricature with the bestowal of the 'crab' epithet by Atkinson,(not sure of tbe time line,so may be wrong?) how little the English game has learned....
A technically and tactically accomplished player and very dignified figure.
RIP.

This is a lovely, heartwarming anecdote about Ray Wilkins from Nigel Quashie. Worth a read
In an Instagram post paying tribute to his former manager, ex-QPR midfielder Nigel Quashie told the story of how Wilkins gave him his debut against Manchester United at Old Trafford.
I will always be proud to say how lucky I am to have been coached, managed and even to have met you. If it wasn't for you I would never have started my career playing football and I will never forget going to Manchester United as a YTS trainee to do all the kit and boots in the changing room for the first-team squad.
One hour and 30 minutes before kick-off you name the team and I was in it, and that's how my debut went. I didn't even get to think about it because all you said was: you're number 18, here are your boots and shin pads, just go and play, have fun and treat it like you're over the park with your mates.
My mum never had a mobile phone back then because we couldn't afford anything like that and everything went through her work or home phone. I asked you after the game if I could call home to speak to her. You said use my mobile and call this number - it was my mum on the other end of the line and she said she was outside by the away team bus.
I went outside to see her and asked how did you get here because I knew she couldn't afford it. She told me Ray had got the club to pay for her train ticket to come to the game and then told me Ray got the club to give us our first mobile phone in life during the week and he wanted to surprise me, knowing I was making my debut.
I was given a chance by Ray Wilkins, one of the legends of the game, and to this day you are the first person I mention when it comes to football and that will never change. You will be missed so much not just in the football world but as a real human being with such class. Thanks for everything and my thoughts go to all the family. Sleep well Sir Ray Wilkins.
