Let’s say a club such as Sunderland are approached by an older superstar, (someone like Ronaldo for example),, who is out of contract. The Star offers to play for team and manage them for zero cash, but receive 51% ownership after 3 years providing certain attainable goals are reached.
Do you think this would be a good deal for the club? Do you think this would be a good deal for the player?

Obviously it’s a stupid deal for the club. What happens down the line when he tires of his new plaything? He donates his 51% to his girlfriend, mistress, or just someone he met in the pub or alternatively stuffs them completely by donating his 51% to the Newcastle United makem hating society.

Same could be said of any investor?

Neil Aspin FC in three years perhaps. If he hits them targets.
Could see Smurf structuring such a deal, to be different.

Same could be said of any investor? Yes but most investors use hard cash usually backed up by financial nous in order to see a return on their investment. You just wouldn’t trust the motives of someone like a Mr. Ronaldo when his only investment is his time. Like I say when he got bored he would just as likely fritter it away in a whim.

Obviously, the Financials would have to make sense. If Star would earn 20 million in 3 years, they would only get 20 million worth of ownership, so in this example it would probably have to be a club more like Coventry or port Vale. In addition to putting in 20 million, the club would receive a massive boost in gates and probably results possibly moving up a division or 2. Star would be 20 million out of pocket but would have extreme motivation to see club do well. As far as frittering the club away, why would anyone who is a true star want to leave that as their final football legacy?

Bloody hell Mr Coats, this is a terrible place to come for business advice..... And Ronaldo will never play for Stoke, not even for a controlling share.
