With the appointment of Paul Lambert, some level of optimism about our future has been returned to our ranks of fans.
However, looking back at the course of our season so far, I can recall there was good cause for optimism at the start of the season, but in football things can go so wrong so very quickly, so we have certainly got to be enthusiastic and get behind the team now.
In August the defence looked reasonably well sorted with the signings of BMI and Zouma, and some guy named Wimmer, and of course Jack was fit and back in goal.Yet 5 months on and we have conceeded 50 goals, the highest of any team in the premier league. Similarly we might have been excited about our attacking potential as well. Berahino was said to be fit, we had signed a guy from Paris St Germain, unloaded Joselu, and added young stars Verlinden and N'Goy to the squad. But again we find ourselves now with major problems going forward.
I'm glad we have a New Year and a new start and we can start looking hopefully onwards and upwards again.

I might be alone here but I sadly expected exactly what we've got from Berahino.

Consistently used out of position then he comes back and gets 2 in 2 and is dropped again. He's a confidence player, Lambert could be exactly what he needs to thrive.

Excellent option to have on the bench, bring him on last 20 minutes so he can test out the opposition's tired legs. Also, I can't see us loaning out another 18m signing.

Brede Hangeland was in Norwegian TV2's Premier League studio on Monday, talking about Sparky (he was his manager during Hangeland's Fulham-period). He actually said that when Sparky took over in 2010, the players went against his instructions in terms of defending, because they started leaking goals. They basically refused to play the way Hughes told them to. Marky Mark eventually adjusted his tactics and listened to his players, but Hangeland clearly stated that Hughes under no circumstances has any competence in defensive coaching (that bit his pretty obvious anyway).

That echoes exactly my own thoughts. But nobody could have foreseen how injuries would wreck that defence or that Berahino would continue his downward spiral once he'd had a pre-season. That and the fact that Wimmer has turned out to be such a flop. And no doubt Hughes et al were thinking the same. Lambert has inherited some of those problems and he'll have to find a workaround. It won't be easy, but judging from what I'm now reading on here and hearing things from the fans I know, he's re-signed something that could make things work. He seems to have stirred the natives in a positive way and will have that most valuable of assets, starting Saturday. I'm talking about the 12th Man support that we were once famous for. The Brit/Bet365 atmosphere can be daunting to most away teams as well as a psychological lift to our own players. So let's just do our part and allow Lambert to do his. My six will be at the Bet365 on Saturday playing their part. COYMP! OS.
