He was a decent keeper, it goes without saying you didn't play for Shankly unless you were a decent player. That's a great story in the Echo about Tommy Lawrence being stopped in the street to be asked if he remembered the 67 Cup Final.

One of the many characters that made the 60s and 70s such a memorable period for football in this country. RIP.

Don't make footballers like that anymore. For starters, they'd be applying Nivea for hours on end. Secondly they probably wouldn't be called "Tommy".

Subject of one of the great shankly stories ,
post a 1-0:defeat at arsenal which delayed a title win and was caused by his error , story goes he said to silent dressing room , sorry boss my fault should have kept my legs shut , to which shankly replied no son it’s your mother who should have kept her legs shut .

When I was kid I used to be fascinated with the keepers. Tommy, Les Green of Derby, Gary Sprake, Bob Wilson and the like. Takes me back. Just going off subject, my old man always pronounced Derby as Durby!! Weird.

He looked like everybody's brother in law. RIP Tommy. Your brother in law a bit of a fatty is he?! The original Lawro didn't look the part but was still a good keeper.

I’ve got very fond memories of Tommy, played the game in better times before money ruined it! May you RIP.
