Hi Just heard an interview earlier this morning on 5 Live Sportsweek with Gordon Banks who is 80 next week. They were talking about the save from Pele in the 1970 World Cup and Pele had sent Gordon both a letter and a video message. The presenter said that the video message would be on the 5 Live website later. Also spoke about the move from Leicester to Stoke. Leicester had put Gordon up for sale in his prime at the age of 28 and Roger Hunt had told Gordon not to sign for anyone as Shankly was going to sign him for Liverpool. Gordon waited but didn't hear anything. Then Stoke came in for him and Gordon said he couldn't wait to get away from Leicester and play for someone that wanted him. It was rumoured that Liverpool thought that £50,000 was too much for a goalkeeper. How times have changed. What also came through was the clarity with which Gordon recalled the Pele save (as though it was yesterday) and his enthusiasm for the game and what a genuinely nice guy he is. Gordon Banks is the reason I support Stoke. He was my favourite player as a kid and although I'm not from Stoke, decided to support them because Gordon played for them. Anyway it was a great listen and well worth listening to once they put it on their site. Podcast now available here: www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b09jr6hsPele message here: www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p05rynh4Cheers GB

Class from Pele - as you would expect. Pele and Banks are two genuine legends of the game - and one of them is ours!

He's an old fashioned gentleman and a great guy, he presented our junior club with the FA community club award, great stories and had plenty of time for everybody for photos and signings.

I’ve met quite a few people in my time who have nothing whatsoever to do with Stoke on Trent but who follow the club because Gordon Banks was their hero back in the 60/70s. Not many players could have done that.

Class from Pele - as you would expect. Pele and Banks are two genuine legends of the game - and one of them is ours! Just a different era altogether, the mutual respect exuded in that famous photo of Pele and Moore embracing, the self-effacing way Banks talks about the reverence he had for Carlos Alberto's pass in the build up to the save, all genuine Titans in terms of ability, but also possessing something ineffable that just contrives to make them seem better human beings than many modern players. Humility, dignity, talent.Colossi of the game.

Still the best keeper ever, I've heard some say he wasn't big enough to have played in the premier league. I refuse to believe that, anyone that saw him play in his prime would agree with me.

Terriffic post. Some random thoughts about parts of it: ...Gordon said he couldn't wait to get away from Leicester and play for someone that wanted him... Christ. Imagine that. No matter how good the young Shilton was, just imagine having Gordon Banks on your books and not wanting him. The football equivalent of being the bloke at Decca records who said "thanks but no thanks" to the Beatles. ...What also came through was the clarity with which Gordon recalled the Pele save (as though it was yesterday)... I totally get this. I played several sports (rugby, basketball, cricket and footy) as a bad amateur. Once in a while, something would go just the way you planned it, or your body would just do something automatically, and something really good would happen. I have a short "highlights reel" in my head, where I can remember thoughts, impressions, movements and events in a really vivid picture of the few things I did playing sport where something went truly right. If a even a nobody like me has those memories, what must it be like to be among the greatest of all time at something, and to be able to look back? Mind boggling. I must have seen the Pele header hundreds of times, and every time it's still a puzzle how Banksy keeps it out. ...what a genuinely nice guy he is... That's the difference between being admired and respected, and being loved. ...Gordon Banks is the reason I support Stoke. Me too. Happy 80th, Banksy.

Happy birthday to the great man !
He's a real gentleman, very unassuming, globally admired and respected and a real credit to our club.
It's a real travesty that he's never had any honour bestowed on him.

He was walking round the lake at trentham with John holditch the ref who gave Man Utd something like 7-9 minutes added time in a cup final I think and kept fergie in a job , I may be wrong as I’m old 😂

I am sure he won’t remember but I met him once.
It was one of those Dicky Bow does in Stafford and he was one of the speakers. When he came into the bar he obviously did not know any one and I was the first person he bumped into. I immediately said “Hello good evening Mr Banks” and he nodded and went straight to the bar.
Much to my suprise he returned with a half pint and started talking to ME ! !
During our conversation I told him that one of the best games I had ever seen was SCFC v W Ham at Hillsbough. Before I could finish my sentence he took the words out of my mouth and said “ It was a 0. 0 draw.
A true gent . If Gordon is reading this Happy Birthday.

Loved the way they homed in on Banksy in the stand yesterday on MOTD after Jack made a save. He was indisputably, undeniably, indubitably the world's #1 goalkeeper back in the day and, guess what, he played for Stoke City ! And he is The President of our football club! So proud, Happy Birthday Gordon

Quite simply the best goalkeeper that ever graced a football pitch. He’s the benchmark for every other keeper.
When any goalkeeper makes a good save I often turn to my fellow season ticket holders and say “Banksy would have caught it with one hand”!
Happy 80th Sir Gordon.

Played golf in a fourball with him at an oatcake golf day at Wolstanton. Gave me a print of the save signed by him and Pele. Really nice guy no airs or graces and was willing to talk about everything

Cheers GB In Docherty's autobiography he writes about Waddington having to sell players to balance the books and Tony rang him to see who he wanted to buy. He bought Jimmy Greenhoff but the Man United board wouldn't let him pay Waddington's price for Shilton. Wiki says United balked at Shilton's wage demand. Either way, United were not prepared to pay a lot for a goal keeper and Clough bought him the next season. Shilton went on to Championship, PFA Player of the Year, 2 European Cups, LC, etc. but he was too expensive for United!

When I pick my greatest Stoke X1 ,there is only one choice for the No1 spot and we have had some very good keepers going back to Jimmy O'Neill, John Farmer, Peter Fox , Tommy Sorrensen ,Asmir Begovic and now Jack Butland , but none compares with Gordon Banks probably the best goalkeeper ever.

Forget who the pundits were, but one said Banks never flew himself across the goal unlike Peter Bonetti did The other pundit replied that Banks had no need to, as he"d know where the ball was going and waited for it.# Think it may have been Saint&Greavsie Whoever, it was bloody true Loved Banksy [and Foxy]
