"His school routinely washed uniforms for children whose families didn’t have a washing machine.
The school recently stepped in to help after discovering a pupil begging outside a supermarket and its free breakfast club was “really needed”. But lack of sleep had become another big symptom of poverty – and a barrier to learning.
“We’ve got a lot of kids in homes with not enough beds or a mum sleeping with two or three children,” the head said. Support staff would often take children out of class who weren’t coping because of exhaustion to let them sleep for an hour or two. “Some children are falling asleep in lessons, and not just the little ones,” he said.
The school had many children living in “desperate neglect”. “Kids are sleeping on sofas, in homes with smashed windows, no curtains, or mice,” he said. “I come out of some of these properties and get really upset.”
A report published on Friday by the Child of the North campaign, led by eight leading northern universities, and the Centre for Young Lives thinktank, warned that after decades of cuts to public services, schools were now the “frontline of the battle against child poverty”, and at risk of being “overwhelmed”. It called on the government to increase funding to help schools support the more than 4 million children now living in poverty in the UK."
Fuck that, it's tax cuts that we need!
If kids aren’t fed and don’t get enough sleep, they are never going to achieve anything in school. That’s probably what the Tory govt want and it really highlights the absurdity of “anyone can do anything in this country when they put their mind’s to it”. To be fair, they're obviously just trying to prove the point that "anyone can do anything..when they put their minds to it" even without any intellect or adult supervision at all. After all, the Tories have managed to tear apart an entire country with barely a braincell between them and no one putting their minds to anything! Point proved, I guess.

See last night's panorama to see what a mess the tories have made to local councils The mismanagement here over years of tory controls is criminal Where people employed on inflated wages are not upto the job The contracts signed under the tories again are inflated and usually go to there mated Eg 1800 to clean a 1 bed flat

Personally, I think it’s really disrespectful to people who have actually served when people like this assume elements of their image to appear patriotic. You don’t have to have served to love your country, but if you want to play dress up when “fighting for British culture”, you could just go do the real thing. Lawrence Fox is a great example of the crappy aspects of British culture that I’d want to get rid of. Had everything handed to him on a plate yet still couldn’t get into University after being expelled from bloody Harrow. By being a general wanker, he’s still found a way to make money convincing working class people that he’s one of them.

Private educated fellow with private educated kids suggests those who want them to pay tax "don't get it" 🤣.
Why do working class people who want a better education have to take student loans which result in an extra 10% tax for life in many cases.
Surely the solution here is that if it is unaffordable then make a loan available for parents which comes out of the salary like tax. And any remaining balance then gets passed to the kids.
Why should the rich get tax breaks for private school when the rest of us get extra taxes if we want a better education.

The loan for parents sounds fine to me, but it’s their investment in their kids future to pay off.

Reform are starting to produce something quite remarkable. Polling up to 15% and it's only going one way. If Nige comes out and stands/campaigns for them then this election is going to be carnage. Incredibly exciting stuff for those on the right and indeed, disaffected red wall voters. Reform are heading into unchartered territory for a new/minnow party. The timing is perfect for them. Up against a Tory government that makes Blair look further to the right than Thatcher and a Labour Leader who stands for just about nothing. Imagine a situation where Starmer wipes out the Tories and isn't even the main story. 😆 x.com/rupertlowe10/status/1770709401390710868?s=48&t=NobCBzZCJRE1F-1an4hdBAOur luvvie liberal state broadcaster starting to get a tad nervous, lashing out at Ricky Tice with libellous language? www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2024/03/19/bbc-apologises-for-calling-reform-far-right-richard-tice/

Great point about a student loan for private school fees and comparing it to the student loans the majority must have for tertiary education. I had never thought about that before. Rich people will always moan about having to subsidise those who aren’t as rich. The fact is, most rich people aren’t rich through their endeavours. They either inherited or were gifted money from family, or they were very lucky that when they bought a house it rose dramatically in value. Totally outside of their control.

I wouldn't disagree and as things stand right this second, they won't win many, if any seats. But I suspect they are are only a few points off winning seats and with the trajectory only going one way, it could be quite the story. They need to get that polling up to 20%+ which is entirely plausible. Particularly given their Trump card (no pun intended) hasn't been unleashed yet.
