I agree with "our country will never be the same". Yes, it will continue to change and evolve, as it always has done. Our politics has sunk into the mire. There was a time when politicians stuck to their principles and saw the opposite point of view, or as in the case of Jack Ashley worked for the good of his constituents. But those sorts of politicians have gradually been forced out by the careerists and extremists. For me the rot started in the Liberal party with the likes of Thorpe and Smith in the 70s. Then we had the extremists doctrinaire Thatcher who brought destruction of society on a wave of monetarist ideology. Then we had the corruption (moral and financial) of the sleaze government of Major. The new millennium brought the New Labour age with not just the internet, but the loss of honesty, with Alistair Campbell spinning the truth, releasing bad news "on the right day" or burying the errors, giving us the "post truth age". Further compounded by relaxing financial regulations leaving the banks to reek havoc following unsustainable American practices. Brown was to follow with the MPs expenses scandal and actually sending MPs to prison for their crimes. For the last decade we have had the utter incompetence of coalition and Tory government and just as bad incompetent government opposition. The whole lot stinks to high heaven. There is one ray of light in all this. By leaving Europe we are able to rule ourselves and throw out incompetent corrupt politicians, whatever their political colour. We can elect governments of our choice who have the power to pass the laws of our country. Rather than been endlessly drawn into to ever closer union where we will become a fringe nation on the edge of Europe being ruled by a self perpetuating bureaucracy that no one has elected. We may have corrupt incompetent government, but I would rather that and be able to remove them at the next election. If Labour was actually to get some backbone and put up sensible policies and deliver what the people want, it could be in continuous government, but alas it is ruled by an academic left wing and financed by the trade unions, so it is out of touch before it starts. Being able to vote out incompetent and corrupt governments certainly seems to be going well in this country so far...

I see the Bluffer has one an IgNobel. Thoroughly deserved.
For medical education, for "using the Covid19 pandemic to show the world that politicians can have a more immediate impact on life and death than scientists and doctors can".
Well done, Bluffer.

The vicious, nasty it's all your fault party is back big time. You do have to admire those Spitting Image folk, they get more and more lifelike every time, that's very realistic.

"World-beating" test and trace system, now widely described as farcical may be out-sourced to Amazon.. The Telegraph quotes a government source as saying " experts in delivery services" were needed. I can only hope this was Michael Gove saying this and the government will have finally completely disappeared up its own fundament

Meanwhile, Dominic Raab urges the US to blame the EU, not the UK after Joe Biden's Brexit criticism.
Always someone else's fault...

Oooh dear, large Judith Woods comment piece in today's Torygraph...
"Are you sitting comfortably? We need to talk. No, it's not about Christmas, that's still cancelled. Not about a second lockdown either, make-believe testing targets or the whole foreign travel imbroglio.
It's about Boris. Gung-ho Brexit Boris. Bring them to their feet at conference Boris. Buccaneering, broad sunlit uplands Boris. The thing is, he's just not up to the job. The unavoidable truth is that Boris Johnson is CEO of the UK. And by any measure he's failing...
"Contrast Boris with Nicola Sturgeon who is informal yet firm and, more crucially, trusted. Or Angela Merkel who keeps the German people updated without the need for flippant quips" etc etc for about a dozen additional column inches.
Ouch...perhaps even the DT is starting to realise what most of us have understood for years...

Amal Clooney: Lawyer quits UK envoy post over Boris Johnson’s ‘lamentable’ Brexit bill Not all that surprising. The UK government's senior lawyer resigned, the government's Scottish equivalent has also now gone and now this one. It epitomizes the race to the bottom that Brexit will produce in this country. Levelling up? Unlikely, if the government won't even abide by the law which they voted for less than a year ago!

On a related note, I see Dildo Harding has hit the ground running, blaming Sage for the failure of the "world-beating" track and trace system. A Sage representative hit back: "Interesting to be blaming Sage. Has been clear in the advice that the UK faced an inevitable increase in community transmission and cases after the summer [post lockdown] and needed a fully functional and trusted track, trace, isolate in place". Always someone else's fault isn't it.... As an update... Sir Jeremy Farrar, the director of the Wellcome Trust, who sits on the government's scientific advisory group, said Sage had given clear advice that a fully functioning test track and trace should be in place. Sir Jeremy then posted his own comments from an Andrew Marr interview in June in which he warned of a "nasty rebound" if steps were not taken to improve testing. You can see why Dildo gets so many top jobs...ignore the incompetence of her own govt, pass the blame onto someone else...
