Thousands of NHS managers rake in six-figure salaries, screams the Daily Telegraph today, in its latest efforts to make people think that nurses are really greedy bastards and they've had their clap now shut the fuck up and get back to work. Love John Redwood's contribution: "...the figures make it much more difficult to understand the NHS's current woes . One of the prime tasks of well-paid senior managers must be to recruit, retain and motivate staff to deliver a good service," he said. "I'm all in favour of people being well paid. But we've given an awful lot of extra money, why aren't we seeing the waiting lists come down? And what do 36,000 managers do that 33,000 couldn't?" He's great, isn't he! Quite happy to defend bankers getting massive bonuses on the basis that you have to pay the big salaries to attract the best staff, not quite so keen to apply the same logic to the public sector by the sounds of it. He even said back in 1997 that after 18 years of Tory government the NHS needed more funding! I'd like to see his approach apply equally to parliament. What do 650 MPs do that 500 couldn't? What do 780 Lords do that 550 couldn't? Not heard you say much about that, John Still, as far as the DT is concerned, job done in that trickle effect of trying to get public opinion onside with the government, I suppose. Redwood only ever talks complete bollocks. People keep going on about the bloated NHS but it spends a lower proportion of its budget (around 2.5%) on management and administration than most other similar nations....oh ,and the wonderful efficient private sector US spends 15%.

I was joking previously when I said the hold up at No 10 was that they'd found some evidence that hadn't yet been destroyed. Actually, it seems that wasn't far off the truth. The DT reports "The Committee is trying to secure WhatsApp messages and emails that show Mr Johnson knew the scale of lockdown-breaking partying within government while he issued blanket public denials. But some of their requests have fallen on stony ground. Many witnesses do not have their government phones from the time [convenient] or were never privy to such conversations among senior officials".

I actually think this is part of the problem. A lot of the managers are clinical by nature and get called into support with clinical matters because the NHS is woefully short staffed and underfunded.

Which says a lot about what Tory Central thinks about them. Difficult to think why someone with 30p Lee's highly dubious mates and abilities would be considered otherwise.

Well, rebuilding the armed forces doesn’t sound like an awful idea given the war in Europe. Can’t agree with the rest though.

It's the only conclusion to be drawn isn't it? Although I'm beginning to wonder how much Sunak actually knew, it seems an unbelievably risky appointment when you consider the mistakes he's made recently.

Not sure how much Reform will split the Tory vote for two main reasons. First, no-one really knows who they are. Second, unless they identify a single ticket USP like Ukip did, there's nothing different enough about them.

So if it wasn't "alleged" and had been proven then, the rioting would have been ok? How you cannot see what she is doing is staggering. There was absolutely no reason WHATSOEVER for her to mention anything about "alleged" behaviour. She simply needed to condemn the violence unequivocally but oh no, she deliberately decided to bring the petrol and the matches to the table herself.

I had you down for better than this Cobs. Read it again. “alleged” She’s not said they’re guilty of anything? Ultimately wasn’t that the reason it allegedly happened. I don’t think she’s saying anything new or saying anyone’s guilty of anything and she’s condoning what was inexcusable behaviour.
