Interesting obituary in today's Telegraph, Gaia Servadio, the ex mother-in-law of one Boris Johnson...
"Johnson and Gaia's daughter, Allegra, met at Oxford, although he made a poor impression from the off with her mother. A skiing holiday together was almost sabotaged when he forgot his passport, while his suitcase turned out to be full of dirty sheets. On the morning of his wedding to Allegra in 1987, Johnson revealed to his host of the previous night, the MP John Biffen, that he lacked much of the requisite morning dress. He was married in Biffen's borrowed trousers and cufflinks, though in his own shoes (with holes in the soles) as his feet were larger than those of the MP. Britain's future prime minister then contrived to misplace his new wedding ring and to leave the marriage certificate behind in Biffen's trousers. He and Allegra were divorced in 1993. While generous to those she liked, Allegra's mother had rather less time for those she did not. "For him," she said of Johnson, "the truth does not exist"."
And this bloke got to be PM...says a lot about our country really, doesn't it, and why these privileged fools have it heading inexorably downhill. Not that they will care or be affected by it, of course.

More lies from this government, as they break one of the promises they made to get elected. www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-58462359Now, I'm all for having adequately funded services paid for out of general taxation, this seems to me to be the fairest and most transparent way of doing things and we should be mature enough as a nation to accept that we need to fully explore how we fund failing public services that so obviously need additional funding. But, two things... First, why does anyone continue to believe anything that comes out of this government when so much of it is just plain bollocks that tells people what they want to hear at any given moment then does the complete opposite and secondly, why is it always the poorest that get hit hardest? I mean, the answers are pretty obvious, but interested to know how Tory voters justify this stuff (and of course why everything is really the fault of 'The Left')...

You're right, I should follow your lead, bury my head in the sand and simply accept the fact that the country is rapidly going down the pan when it could be so much better.
Letter from a whiner in the Telegraph today...
"Not so long ago, scrawled all over the Vote Leave bus, we were shown the vast amounts to be funnelled to the NHS as a benefit of our leaving the EU. The benefit was to last in perpetuity, day-in, day-out, year after year. Has it all been spent now or has it all gone wrong somewhere?"
Who'd have thought it...even the loyal readers of the Telegraph are starting to question this lot...

The social care reforms intend to raise £12bn a year. Why the need to raise NI at all. Can't they use this £18bn and have some left over?

Priti Patel backed by health secretary amid fresh claims she broke rules link the home secretary as she faced fresh claims of breaking ministerial rules over a meeting with a billionaire Tory donor and British Airways. the problem is if he sacks her for this or Williamson or sumac or Hancock for any of there misdemeanours then he would have to sack himself incompetence together with corruptness from the very top to the bottom yet still the tory boys back them no matter what time for them all to go

Interesting take from Stephen Crabb on the planned cuts to UC - learning from mistakes should be seen as a positive approach and he should be listened to on this: www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-58501917It’s the term “in-work poverty” that concerns me the most, as this is becoming more and more normal, people living on pay, week to week/month to month. And i don’t think it just affects those at the bottom, I think some in the middle are also in a precarious position particularly with the planned NI increase. Some people do need education and support on how to manage their money better undoubtedly but the planned cut will a crippler for some who are already on the edge and there will be nothing they can do about it.

Not a popular opinion this , especially in stoke , but nobody complained when the government raised the credit and paid billions subsidising people and businesses to help get us through this shit and now the government want to recoup it all Labour only want the rich to pay for it.

Not a popular opinion this , especially in stoke , but nobody complained when the government raised the credit and paid billions subsidising people and businesses to help get us through this shit and now the government want to recoup it all Labour only want the rich to pay for it. I don’t want only the rich to pay for it, I want everyone to pay their fair share, including businesses and those taking government contracts but then moving finances off-shore to benefit their shareholders. A good example would be the private social care and care home companies who have substantial contracts around the uk, taking funding from the NHS and local authorities but then, legally, moving profits abroad: www.carehomeprofessional.com/care-home-sector-leaking-hundreds-of-millions-of-pounds-to-offshore-investors/www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/markets/article-9613901/Care-home-giant-HC-One-hikes-fees-residents-owners-cash-in.htmlWhat I’d like the government to do is tighten their own regulations to stop this from happening and ensuring that full tax is paid on the profits companies make from money they receiving from government funding. No doubt companies will continue to be creative with their accounting but I think this solution would be fairer and ensure that the public benefits from the money they put into the system. I would also argue a lot of people complained about the way government handled the spending during the pandemic, particularly regarding the contracts and public procurement processes that went out of the window with some parties receiving substantial amounts of money and not delivering what was required or expected.
