Most people grow out of The Cure when they leave the sixth-form and become adults.
As I'm mentally yet to become an adult I'm still allowed to like them, even if Robert Smith has now morphed into Jo Brand.
The new tunes aren't as good as the classics ("Just Like Heaven", "Inbetween Days" etc) but they still knock spots off the fucking Wombats and friends in the pages of the NME.
Goooaaarrrn Fat Bob.
- new Cure single.

For some reason I have been singing this line all day: Hand in hand Is the only way to land And always the right way roundAnd now I see this thread and realise it's from the Love Cats

I didn't mind a bit of Fat Bob up until the late 80s.
What I didn't like were The Cure fans - mostly all po-faced fake part-time Goths.

btw zippy I have finally got my copy of "Imperial Wax Solvent".
Some absolute belters on there..."Wolf Kidult Man", "Latchkey Kid", "Senoir Twilight Stock Replacer" and "50 Year Old Man" (especially the banjo break) are all absolutely great.
Doesn't seem to be as much obvious filler on there either as some of the other Fall albums.

My adoration for the Fiery Furnaces makes all my insides ache at once. They are superb.
As for the Cure, can anyone tell me how to import the "CUNT!" emoticon from UNPC?

I only heard of them as Widow City was coming out (the best thing Marc Riley has ever done was caning this record and bringing it to my attention), you can imagine how astoundingly pleased i was to discover they had a wealth of records out, all equally as good. I don't think i've heard a song of theirs I dislike yet and I've been through 4 of the records rather thoroughly now. As far as creativity is concerned they kick most of the rest of the current musical umbrella into a big shit filled river. Eleanor Friedberger being hotter than the handle of a balti dish really is the cherry on the cake.
Have you head of A Hawk and a Hacksaw, glenn?

I saw the Hawks & Hacksaws at ATP last December while the others were all elsewhere being more fashionable (I expect.) They whipped up a proper Hungarian goulash and it ruled.
Mr Daftburger - thanks! That'll teach me to try things before coquettishly pretending they're somehow beyond me. 'Karma' whatever that means.

I thought this thread might tempt you out museum boy.
Admit it, you love fat 50-year-old men in make-up singing about cats, just as much as I do.

And no doubt all my requirements in that department will be met at Etruria Canals Festival, 31 May - 1 June 2008, 10.00am - 5.00pm, admission FREE!

I was more than a little bit miffed at missing out on ATP, but at least i didn't have to endure sunn O))).
Was there owt else exciting there that you'd care to recommend? The trouserdog here started his recommend a band thread a few weeks, but i think he fucked off by the time I'd replied. He should be a fully fledged cannibal ox fan by now, but is instead still trapped in the 80's.

Anybody like Fiery Furnaces? Widow City is excellent but like Banksy said, that's thanks to listening to Marc Riley.

So, TD. Do I buy the new one or not?
Close to You and In-between Days were classics (when "Years Old" had a much smaller number before it!), but a lot of the album stuff then was a bit ... pants.
So: Buy it, or rob it?

The Cure are not The Cure anymore but bunch of doom metal imposters. Quite dreadful.

I wouldn't say I'm a dead big fan but I do like them, I have Japanese Whispers and Wish.
JW is one of my favourite alnums but outside those two CDs I don't really know much by them.

The Cure are not The Cure anymore but bunch of doom metal imposters. Quite dreadful. Doom metal imposter...could be a fall song title, but not an accurate description of The Cure's current sound. In fact, stylistically the cure sound exactly like they always did* (well, since the mid 80s anyway). Like most bands who survive 30-plus-years,(The Fall being the obvious exception) the quality of their output has unquestionably dipped since their peak. The miserable stuff is still great (see "Bloodflowers" from 2000), but even though the odd passable-toe-tapper gets churned out (like the new single), even the most die-hard Cure fan would probably admit that Fat Bob hasn't written a pop classic in over 15 years. They're still one of my favourite ever bands though. Going to stick "Disintegration" on now, just to remind me of the good old days of feeling sorry for myself at Sixth-form. *tap-in for GlennA here.
