That day arrived yesterday for me, when I saw Barry Taylor on the front page of the Sentinel having been sentenced for 10 years for an historical sex crime (presumably committed against a minor). A quick bit of background, Barry used to be a publican and later the main delivery driver for Wickes, a pillar of the community kind of guy, and the original allegations were dismissed by the police at the time, and it appears that the girl was told to to withdraw the allegations because of Barry's place in the community. I suspect there are quite a few people on here that know Barry as he was the kind of guy that could not walk down the street without people waving/beeping their car horn etc., and the Barry I knew was pretty much the most decent, hard working and helpful people I've ever met. So reading that he'd been sent down was a shock to me. I wonder now if his outgoing and helpful persona was genuine or whether it was just an incredibly convincing cover to make it hard to believe he could be capable of a sex crime. If I did not know him, I would have read at the report and thought that the guy was a stereotypical pervert, but I know he was not (or at least he hid it very well). The whole thing has left me shocked and conflicted. The Sentinel

Many moons ago I used to drink in a pub and weekends a dozen or so of us would do a pub crawl or go down town.moved out of the area in the 90s but moved back now. Imagine my horror at picking up the sentinel last year and seeing his pic on the front page sent to jail for sex crimes.

I count myself as a good judge of character, but this totally blind sided me.

I remember years ago, maybe 34 or 35 years ago, a friend of mine got done for kerb crawling in Cobridge, he was only 18 or so at the time but the stigma and reputation has stayed with him forever, whenever I meet any old school pals even now we all still remember it.

I think it depends on the nature of the offense. I had a classmate and friend get arrested and jailed for a sex offense. He dated a minor when he was 22, and the parents pressed charges against him.
That didn't change my opinion of him as I don't think the nature of the offense was that severe. In previous times and in many parts of the world, such a relationship is considered totally acceptable and normal.
If it was a violent crime and/or a child, my reaction would be different.
I'm actually upset that he is considered a sex offender and is the in public registry of sex offenders the same as violent offenders and those that committed crimes against children. The offenses are completely incomparable.

Two years is fairly lenient expect him to be in the news again. I knew his dad from parent evenings and he is a very proud Fijian serving in the RN. I would think that the family will send him back to Fiji on his release.

Not saying that was the situation with your mate but this is how police investigate cases like this and courts will take a dim view of males in this situation. Remember the teacher few years ago who eloped with the young pupil. Although she was a willing partner the law threw the book at him.

I know it is an unpopular view, but I think some of these people can't help what they do. Their problem is an illness, not that they are criminals with criminal intent. Fining them, locking them up or whatever is done to them will not cure them of their illness. Yes, it protects other people from them for a while but it does not cure the problem. Some of these people need help in a medical or psychiatric sense, not through criminal proceedings. It's like locking somebody up because they have a virus infection, or a bad leg or something. These comments do not apply to all 'sex offenders' but I firmly believe that some of them simply can't help what they do just the same as you can't help sneezing if you have a cold. I don't know enough about the subject to know if what I've written is bollocks or not but I look at imprisoning some of these people these days in the same way as I look at the imprisonment of homosexuals in the past and that, eventually, a much more appropriate treatment or cure might be found (for sex offendrers, not homos).

A friend and classmate who is 39 now started dating her husband when she was 15 and he was 23. They have a really strong marriage.

I know at 22 that I was a fully developed adult with a brain, a career and a solid judgement when making decisions. At 15 I was a stupid prick who still enjoyed fighting with other lads in my year and getting kicked out of school.

With the friend who started dating her now husband when she was 15 and he was 23, we all thought it was really weird at the time. None of us thought it would end in a marriage that is 17(?) years and counting. But it worked for them. She's actually the dominant one in the relationship and always has been.

Back in the early eighties I worked for a company in Hixon. Around 81/2 they employed a new cleaner, great bloke as nice a guy you could ever meet who couldn't do enough for you, got on with everyone and enen went by his own name.
After about 18 months a mechanic from Coventry Climax came in to repair a sideloader forklift truck. This guy just happened to be a former Prison Officer and recognised him straight away and let everybody know. It turned out this " great bloke" was Albert (Bert) Goozee a notorious figure from the fifties. Nobody knew or would of believed him capable of his appalling crimes. I can't do links and don't wish to list his crimes but you can check him out on Wiki, it's not pleasant reading, Just shows you never really know a person.
