Very good documentary on the conflict on BBC.It is made by the celebrated documentary maker Ken Burns . It is first rate and balanced with some interesting comments from the North Vietnamese perspective. It undermines the Oliver Stone view that Kennedy was for de escalating the war precisely the opposite it seems.
One bloke from Tunstall volunteered to fight in the war for the Americans. It was a man called Stuart Wood.He was killed in 68 and is buried in Tunstall cemetery.

Caught a bit of that the other night, and I agree, it was brilliant. I'm hoping it's on i-player as well so I can watch the bits I missed.

Some very interesting stuff in the museum in Ho Chi Minh, they're still suffering the effects of agent orange even today, I'll bet the average yank hasn't a clue about it.

I'll bet the average yank hasn't a clue about it. They think they won the Vietnam and Korean conflicts. Bless 'em. I've read lots of good books by Vietnam vets, and met a few...characters.

Interesting point made on tv last night
Since Robert Kennedy got shot more Americans have been killed by gunshot in their own country Than in all the wars in American history including the civil war

In fairness, most countries try and airbrush out their worst historical crimes. You do get the feeling the US do it particularly well though.

When the wife told one of her clients on one of the local American Air Force bases what she'd seen the woman genuinely thought she was joking. You are right though, we as a country are hardly as pure as the driven snow either.

Awful war , brilliant sound track So far the series is avoiding the cliche of napalm explosions with a Doors track playing in the background. A suberb series so far, and it looks like it's telling history straight with no obvious bias or slant.

Haven't seen this series Dutch , but the Vietnam war in general always conjures up those credence, doors , stones , Jefferson songs for me a bit superficial I know

I'm a Yank and we are well aware of our tragedy in Vietnam. I love England and its people but tire of nonsense like this.

Most of you don't have a passport, most of you don't know where Iraq is on a map, most of you haven't travelled further than your own county, you marry your cousins, the rest of the world generally hates your scruffy, plaid wearing ignorant selves who look like a bunch of golfers. You have to put a Canadian flag on your backpacks you're so shit scared of the rest of the world. You can't drink more than two beers without getting punchy pissed. And you vote in stupid ignorant presidents to wage unnecessary wars on millions of peasants. If you want to start a war, you started on the right person. Go fuck yourself. A minority of you are great but Christ almighty himself what a fucked up society you live in.

No need for this, chaps. Plenty of ignorant American's just like their are plenty of ignorant British people (Or any other country) Personally I've always found Yanks from outside of the big cities to be proper, honest, down to Earth people like you find across northern England.
EDIT : I agree with whoever said it earlier, Vietnam had a mint soundtrack!

Apart from England (and Meir in particular), the USA is the greatest country in the world.
The only western country with a true and inalieble concept of liberty.
That doesn't mean I'm a fan of their aggression but we're the godfathers of waging war on undeserving countries so as a nation, we have absolutely no moral high ground.
Vietnem, by all accounts, was an horrendous slaughter on both sides. It didn't stop Communism but it contained it, and it's a fucking excellent job that it accomplished that.
God bless the USA and Communism can fuck off.

Excellent documentary on BBC4
One of the best I've seen on TV.
'The first casualty of War is Truth'
JFK is on record as saying the war was un winnable but he wouldn't get elected unless he prosecuted it.
18 days later he was dead.
Thank God we didn't get involved.
Whilst the Americans were carpet bombing & napalming Vietnam into pieces the Viet Cong fucked off down the Ho Chi Minh trails over the border into Laos & Cambodia.
Poor working class kids sent off to die for their country whilst most middle class students got high on drugs, stayed at home, and opposed it.
???
