Be amazed if there isn't all sorts of trouble next year I was looking at a map and pondering whether to go when I saw this thread! I remain undecided. We were thinking the same, but decided with the way Euro 2020 is going to be staged it will hopefully provide a much better experience, and an opportunity to watch games in cities/countries we haven't experienced. Echo your sentiments re the potential for trouble.

I don't get why everyone is wetting their knickers. In the last 48 hours we've had thousands of English fans supporting our two biggest clubs cheering their teams on in Russia, unless I've missed the stories somehow, there were zero reported deaths.
It's no wonder the Russian's have gone from looking upto us & respecting us, to laughing at what we've become.

Purely hypothetical but if someone was killed could Blatter and co. face charges if proven they took a bribe etc knowing the dangers?

They are a collection of humorless neo-nazi retards struggling to deal with their repressed homosexuality and I doubt any person with any self respect would seek approval from them

Will Israel qualify? I hope not. Germany will,Jesus, African teams, please God no, england, are the Ukraine in the mix? It will be like the seventies film "the warriors" They were terrifying in the last WC, now they have home advantage. I think I may give it a miss Well if World war 3 isn't underway by then (or worse!) it could well start there!

It isn't homophobic at all. The aggression and obsession with violence could be a result of deep seated frustration and an inability to be who they want to be in a society that is corrupt from top to bottom, racist from top to bottom, homophobic from top to bottom. I am guilty of not liking Russian male football fans, that is true

I wouldn't safer to watch on tv and you just know Putin will turn it political He turned it political last year. We now know that government officials were involved in organising a paramilitary hooligan force,a mixture of ex military, current police, and well known hardened thugs, all sober and on steroids, to go around beating drunken English fans. Then their media reported on great victories against the english. All countries and governments do barbaric things, but the Russians take it to new levels and seem to glorify it. The Marseille incident is a million pages down near the bottom of their rap sheet of course. I won't be watching the next two world cups. Fifa corruption etc..international football stinks and I put up with premier league corruption only because of stoke After the violence last year one of their ministers was asked how everyone could feel safe during the world cup. Minister replied they would tell them to behave and they would. If only the UK governments had thought of that eh? The startling thing about Russia last year was how indiscriminate they were about who they attacked. On the train to Paris day after the game there was an elderly English woman who looked like Judi Dench who'd been knocked about.

I fear for our supporters. Ain't bothered about other countries fans welfare.
Some fans from small crap counties will be ok or fans that are supposedly loveable!
It wouldn't be a bad idea if our fans were banned for their safety or Marshalled by UK police guards.
I can't imagine England will be there much after the group stages, if we're lucky to even get out the group.

I think you will either see one of two things happen
a) The World Cup will pass off with no trouble which is pretty unlikely but could happen b) There will be trouble but I will be brushed under the carpet by the Russian Government or even denied. The blame will be laid on English and any other supporters even if they are the ones getting a shoeing by their Government. I am quite sure they will say "English started it, anti Russian chants etc etc".
One thing we do know about the Russian Government is that they blame everyone else for their shortcomings and I would be amazed if anything changes at the World Cup.
Odd lot those Russians

as soon as sepp awarded the world cup to russia and qatar we should have told them to shove it up their arse we will just run the home internationals instead. however the fa is spineless and whilst the majority of england fans will not travel due to cost a fair few will go and it is these innocents i feel for.up until recently russia had national service so all their lads will be trained in the art of combat wheras our lads have trained in the pub it will be no contest sepp blatter will have blood on his hands.

Whilst I can understand the scare mongering, and people being wary after Russian hooligans caused mayhem in France, I do get a feeling that the BBC's coverage of Russia is very, very similar to how they covered Ukraine as a country before they hosted the Euros in 2012.
There was panorama, documentaries, and Sol Campbell telling us that people would die and that Ukraine was so many things it actually really wasn't. I recall issues like racism, hooliganism and England fans would be specifically targeted. I knew that was mostly complete and utter rubbish, as i'd been to Ukraine to watch us vs Dynamo, and visited the place at New Year, we were welcomed like we were royalty!
We made the decision to all go back in the summer for the Euro's. The BBC and other news outlets, were so far from the actual truth. Security was huge, but they weren't really that visible, everyone knew they were there, but there was literally no problems.
I think the security that will be in place for the World Cup will be 10x that of what Ukraine had, and unless you venture into the wild / go looking for trouble, I don't really think they'll be many (if any) issues.
Yes Russia is corrupt and Putin is an absolute scum bag, but it's the World Cup. Russia and Putin will want it to run as smoothly as possible.
In saying all that, I'm not going. Lol

What amazes me about the likes of Russia, North Korea and other dictatorships is that they blatantly deny things happen that are so bleeding obvious. For instance the bombing of rebel troops in Syria by Russia was denied by Russian Government, the treatment of the American kid Otto Warmbier by N Korea was denied by Kim Jong despite all the signs. I am going off the subject I know, but my concern is that fans will take a beating or god forbid even worse and we will never know as Russia will ensure no bad news reaches our shore. They will paint themselves to be the victim

Like I keep saying, there is going to be more serious assaults and murders than goals in 2018. Wonder if they'll include that in the OPTA stats

I wouldn't safer to watch on tv and you just know Putin will turn it political I expect trouble but not on the scale some are expecting. Putin? Well, sport is manipulated by politicians everywhere. You're not expecting violence on an epic scale?! On what basis do you have this opinion mate? I fear it will be absolute carnage, that potentially could lead to death of supporters. They did it in France and will many many more hooligans when they play on home soil. I hope I'm proven to be wrong.

I think joe is probably right I think a lot of the trouble in France was gang related rather than state I can not see those gangs being stupid enough to shit on there own doorstep remember putin knows where they live The Russian state won't tolerate bad publicity As a England fan I would be more concerned falling foul of the security services who I believe will be totally proactive Having said this I still wouldn't go

They won't be able to hide it will they? The world's media will be in town for an event like the World Cup. My guess is nothing will happen. Putin simply won't allow it to be seen that he cannot control his goons when the eyes if the world are on his country.
