In the international break as things are quiet. Just thinking about a Saturday in the early/mid 90's going up to Manchester to browse the fanzines in the excellent Sportspages shop and leaving for home, getting a bit diverted and seeing Man City fans wandering to Maine Road for a Liverpool game and thinking 'Bugger it I fancy going to this!' Parked up, paid on the gate and there I was sat amongst the home fans opposite the Kippax stand a bit bemused! Think it ended up 1-1 with Ian Rush scoring for Liverpool. Left the game, went home and thought 'Did I just do that?' Couldn't do it now!

Two Millwall fans beat up the beacon radio mascot. Best mates dad decided he wanted to take in a game and took us there. Random game to be at. Only non stoke game I've ever been to

Fucking horrible experience if I'm being honest, felt edgy as fuck stood silently amongst a load of Wolves fans watching two teams that I hate.

Did a QPR v Millwall league cup tie in the early 90's as well when I was London for a few days, memorable because Ray Wilkins was playing for Rangers at the end of his career and he was brilliant that night, total class. Got on the tube after, and the train was full of Millwall and I had a small metal Stoke badge on my coat, spent the journey with my hand on my chest covering it up until I got off!

Not that it got much better when they modernized it......it's like a custard colored abortion. I lived in a house just a couple of streets away, a few doors down front the Goalpost pub. It was a personal ritual to take a piss on that stadium on the way home from many a night out.

On our way to a Stoke away game travelling from Portsmouth, think it was Leicester, got to near Reading and found out the game had been called off due to too much rain so we went and watched Reading v Chesterfield, sat with the Chesterfield fans, some of whom thought it would be fun to start filling each other in, more entertaining than the match to be fair.

The South Bank at Wolves. Remember it from 1989 when we played there, 0-0 draw and Derek Statham missed a pen. Crumbling terraces. Grim times.

Loads. I used to enjoy going Stockport on Friday or Monday nights. Always sort of admired their fans being loyal when they were in the shadow of two big Manc clubs. Then when we faced them in 91/92 was stunned by how nasty many of them were.

Plymouth v Birmingham pre-season friendly mid-70s. Was in North Cornwall on holiday at the time. Think it ended 1-1. Sat in the old wooden stand. Thought it was going to collapse under us. Plymouth fans seemed a decent bunch

Lived in Lincoln in the early 90s. Had a mate come to stay for the weekend and we ended up going to the o!d Sincil Bank ground to watch them play Halifax in Div 4. Must have been Autumn 91. Game was proper fourth division stuff, the only thing I really remember from a shit 0-0 draw was a goalmouth scramble that went on for about a minute. That Italian magazine that decided recently that 15 seconds of a QPR game was the worst football ever would change their mind if they'd seen this episode. The ball was pinging around everywhere, no one could clear it or get a shot in. Quite possibly the only time I have genuinely laughed out loud at what was going on on the pitch. I know we were third division shit at that time but this was truly awful.
Bizarrely, later that Saturday, me and said mate pulled a couple of birds who came and chatted to us in the boozer on the basis that they'd been at the game and seen us laughing at how shit it was.
We both had girlfriends so didn't shag either of them. Looking back, should've done.

Ayr united vs Partick thistle in 2009. Was up in scotland with the ex visiting her family and took in the game at Somerset park. The ground made layer road look good but even though it was dilapidated it had a certain charm about it. The big old floodlights reminded me of football grounds from yesterday.

When I lived in Germany in 2002, I went to a preseason friendly between a local team called SV Drochtersen/Assel and Hamburger SV (HSV). It ended 9-0 and was pretty dull. I actually remember more about the halftime bratwurst than the match.

Various interesting and entertaining Leeds games in the mid to late 80's. Travelled with a fledgling Staffordshire Whites (Neil's crew) AKA the Service Crew Rentamob. Numerous riots and wanton vandalism. Lots of drinking.
A few Plymouth games. Uneventful. Lots of drinking.
A St Johnstone game. Uneventful. Lots of drinking.
A few Wales rugby internationals at the Millennium. Lots of drinking. Mostly in the Philharmonic where it's customary to get bladdered on Brains SA (Skull Attack) and wipe your shoes on the way out.
A Crewe v Mansfield game in the mid 80's. Our game was postponed so a handful of us went exploring. Someone threw a whole house brick at an away fan. Nobody batted an eyelid including the two bobbies standing watching.

Olympique Marseilles vs Valenciennes in Ligue 1. I was on holiday on Cote d'Azur about seven years ago. On impulse, we bought tickets when shopping. You can buy football and rugby tickets, theatre tickets, concert tickets, and all sorts through designated booths at most shopping centres and supermarkets.
Cracking atmosphere. Mad fans - friendly though. Free match programmes which, tradition dictates, everyone shreds and throws around. Raining printed confetti all match. Good game, OM won 4-1 and I had a foreign team to follow.

Walking the dog through the park near my home where there are a load of football pitches I came across Partick Thistle playing Dumbarton in a pre-season friendly.
Someone videoed the game and put them on You Tube - one cracking goal as well...

On holiday in Denmark I watched a match between the fans of Aarhus and Aalborg organised as a charity match during a players strike with about 3 to 4 thousand fans watching. Some years later I was in the away end at the Etihad supporting Aalborg in a Europa league match and got chatting to a bloke who it turned out was at the same fans match.

Back then it was still all terracing and most of it open to the elements. Couldn't have been much more than 1500 souls there, the kind of game where nearly everyone has a crash barrier to themselves.
