Sorry but todays football programmes.. Motd football focus.. Are banal and incredibly lacking in insight compared to this
Look at gary Lineker chatting away with mark hughes for about 20 mins about not a lot compared to this
If the bbc made programmes like this today hughes would have been debating how well he's done at stoke Sat opposite Tony Pulis.
And the programme would have been a lot more interesting

I don't recall it was known until late on in his managerial career he was a drinker, and if you say never considered for the England job, I think being interviewed after Revie's departure he was, but going through one controversial manager they were frightened to try another. Back in the good old (pre Virgin Trains) days, the Stoke City Southern Supporters' Club ran trips from Euston to every Saturday home match. Occasionally, usually through Monica Hartland's many connections, we would have a guest travel with us. One such guest was the secretary to the then chairman of the FA and around the time England were looking for a new manager. When asked about this and Clough's eligibility for the job, she (sorry, can't remember her name) made it very clear (in 'strictest confidence'....not!) that he would never be considered for the post as he was known as liking a drink a little too much. I remember we were all a little taken aback ourselves. Is that FA code for "speaking his mind"?

There are some shows on the on demand on virgin called 'football mavericks'. Think they are from itv. The 70's one has some of this footage on it. Really great watch and pretty telling about the flair players that could never get a run in the England side back then.

Don Revie was one of the great post war managers. It gets overlooked. With one of the worst disciplinary records ever, they weren't called dirty Leeds for a laugh you know!!! Used to pay the opposition to throw the game too...

Really great watch and pretty telling about the flair players that could never get a run in the England side back then. They all got chances and apart from Hudson made little impression. Because overall they weren't good enough and varied enough to handle the different requirements of international football. No questioning the talent mind you.

Two things missing from programme. Revie, stated Leeds went 29 matches unbeaten. Who stopped their run ? Stoke City 3-2.
The next season with Cloughie in charge, first game,Stoke away, Stoke City 3 Leeds Utd 0.

Apparently clough got the coach driver to pull over on the d road and got the players off the bus for a pre match team talk /major row, just before the game which would have been interesting to see. He was a great manager but obviously walked into a situation at Leeds where one or two were willing him to fail

Very well covered in the Damned United film No, not well covered! Well acted, yes. Realistic, yes. But for the purposes of the film they have attempted to condense and hour's interview into a few minutes. Consequently, Clough appears tongue tied and fractious and Revie in total command, the exact opposite of the real thing. In the real interview, Clough comes out on top through sheer intelligence, Revie an irascible old git! I thought that was an absolutely bizarre choice for the film to make it look as though Revie won. What was that about?

In which way was Clough flawed ? Revie's team in that era were capable of playing great football but also could mix it with the best, people moan that he chased the money but in today's game would not have to it would come to him. Clough was massively flawed....on his own. With Peter Taylor they combined wonderfully. Clough couldn't spot a striker very well & his alcoholism affected him more & more as the years went by. If he had been England manager (with Taylor) then I think he would have thrived at a tournament but have been bored shitless the rest of the time. Is his reliance on Taylor overstated a bit? Definitely not as good without him but still did remarkably well at Forest without him under difficult financial circumstances.

All at LUFC resented this. It makes you wonder why he took the job. Then again, it was the chance to manage the league champions so would he have forgiven himself if he turned it down? Clough's management style worked a beauty at Derby and later at Forest but at Leeds there was a huge difference. Leeds had big name successful players who had been round the block and had medals to prove it. Instead of going in with respect he barged in telling his new players to throw their medals in the bin... and they didn't like it one bit, especially as it undermined their father figure. Leeds was the biggest job he ever had and his inability to handle top players suggests he wouldn't necessarily have been a particularly fantastic England manager. Telling Kevin Keegan to straighten his hair wouldn't have been enough. Clough actually said the Leeds fiasco was the best thing to ever happen to him because for the first time he was financially secure. In that TV debate with Revie he wasn't terribly interested he was just anxious to get the pay of cheque into his bank. Leeds saw the European Cup as their holy grail. In all fairness they should have won it in 1975 but got ripped off by a dickhead ref. So how must they have felt a few years later when Clough won two with a club nowhere near as big as them?

An obviously dated video but Cloughie's opinion is still remarkably accurate...

An obviously dated video but Cloughie's opinion is still remarkably accurate... Whatever your views on the man the Oxford English Dictionary definition of Charisma should simply read Brian Clough. Looking at this video and the one with Revie, there's more coverage than ever but a million times less insight than 40 years ago.

Being interviewed by today's reporters or presenters is like being attacked by a toothless Labrador.
