The wife has finally relented to the pressure from my boys and me. I'm looking for a small dog (that does not make me look gay when I walk it), a Jack Russell/Cairn/Border Terrier would be perfect. I've looked in The Sentinel and Gumtree, and I'm staggered at the cost of puppies these days and I don't want to buy a dog from one of those breeders that treat animals as a money earner first and pet second (or not at all). I'm going to check out Animal Lifeline and the City Dogs home, but I'm guessing that they mainly have older dogs. Any advice will be greatly appreciated and if anyone has a puppy/small young dog that needs a good home, PM me.

I know there are people with jack Russell's and terriers on here but, if I had young children I'd be cautious
On saying that I have a shihtzu who can be a moody fucker at times
Whichever you choose.....be firm from the beginning and rewarding and loving when deserved
My experience with my shithouse is ....dogs are like permanent children
Very loving at times but, can throw tantrums on occasion:D

Some are all trained up....If you go for rescued.....don't believe all they tell you..... we were given absolute bollocks about our dogs history etc Just trust your intuition rich

Don't automatically think smaller dogs are less work we have two, a 5 year old fox red (ginger) Labrador and a 18 month old westie.
The Lab needed much less looking after even as a puppy, feed him, walk him and give him some attention and he will chill on his own no problem, the westie just never stops until she is asleep.

A couple of folks at work have bought French boxers apparently the latest accessory @£ 1500 a pop , waste of money imo . Nicest dog I've seen in a long while was a Labrador my mate got . It failed its final guide dog test . Well trained as well

My dog before was a Bassett hound. Don't have one. They are no more than a small donkey and take no notice of you whatsoever. Constantly raiding the fridge ears slopping about in their bowls when eating and smell like pigs On second thoughts get one. They always say dogs look like their owners

Best thing with the Cairn is his double coat makes him waterproof so just a shake and he's dry and his paws are like pigs trotters so very small and just need a wipe on a towel.
He does lose a little fur as they change colour with the seasons, but they should not be cut only stripped. As ours is just a family pet we just do him with a rake brush takes 3 minutes a week.
He is aggressive towards other animals and has to be kept on his lead but he loves children especially to play ball with. They kill birds, mice, rats etc that is what they are bred to do.
Think teenager with an attitude and you won't be far off.
Most intelligent and funny dog I've ever had but not a pet for cuddles if you want that get the Weechon (westie/bichon cross)which is our other dog she is a miniature teddy bear , loves sitting on your lap(all bloody night) bone idle, loves being brushed and pampered. They need a half hour daily walk and a place to run (back garden).

Personally I'd go for a cross breed because they will not cost the earth, less likely to have in-bred problems and if you are lucky you will get a mix of the good traits of the breeds. Mine is a Staffy/collie/whippet cross and has the loyalty of a staffy, inquisitiveness and energy of a collie and runs like the wind even at 13 years old. She is very obedient and loves to please. Oh and she cost £50 from a farmer whose tri colour collie had somehow been shagged by his neighbours staffy cross thus ruining his hopes of a litter of sheep dogs. I would also advocate getting a cage for your new mutt. It will have its own place for a bit of quiet, less likely to be desrtructive around the house and will happily retreat there at night or if you leave him at home unattended. We had one for first couple of years while she got the puppy bit out of her system and it was worth its weight in gold. Even used it in the car for transportation. About food, I would advise Iams dry food. It costs around £26 for 12kg bag but, depending on the size of your dog, will last 80 days at 150g a day which is recommended amount for 15 kg dog. Works out at 32p a day. Added bonus of small hard dog turds to pick up. Ours has spent 13 years on the stuff.

I've now visited the City Dogs Home and Animal Lifeline and had no luck, and what sad places they are to go. It was striking to me that the most common single breed that ends up abandoned, is the Staffordshire Bull Terrier.

dont bother with animal lifeline ... waste of time You have a point most put more restrictions in place to make it difficult to "adopt" a rescue animal.

When I got mine home we were having terrible skin problems. Turned out a change of food did the trick.

Get a Labrador cracking dogs as long as you walk them at least once a day whether up and down your drive or for miles and miles they are as happy as Larry.
