Being born in our year of 1972,i dont remember Greenoff playing for us but going to my first game in 79 I can remember Crooks and a young Adrian Heath playing for us remember being gutted when he went to Everton and also Bracewell who apart from his injuries was an excellent player. Also remember Chamberlain going to Sheff Wednesday which was also a real downer. After that probably Beagrie and also Higgy when he left for Sunderland!

Thorne for me too for reasons already stated. My favourite player as a child, had his name on the back of my shirt then he moves to Cardiff, one of our closest rivals at the time Legit cried.

Not Marc Wilson, just drifted out of his spot and gave Chelsea another title 😂 Needs more defensive coaching.

- Hudson (the creative engine-room. He could actually walk on water!) - Heath, Bould, Bracewell, Chapman (the talented New Generation) - Peschisolido (The selling of 'pesch. 'nuff said...) - Sigurdsson and Gunnarsson (great players from the island of fire and ice) - Sheron (the predator) - Thorne (the fox in the box) - Fuller (a.k.a. Merlin)

You have to be of an age but I distinctly remember, as a young boy, crying when Calvin Palmer was transferred.

Close call between Jimmy Greenhoff and Mark chamberlain As a kid jimmy was a hero , who now goes to games on the same coach ( on occasions ) . Mark is the only player I have known that when he got the ball would have the whole crowd up on tiptoes ( not all seating in them days ! )

When TP referred to Whelen as "the glue" in the team, this could also have been said about Greenhoff. Greenhoff commanded the team. He could be seen giving encouragement to others, and stirring them on.
When he left, the team just fell apart.
I remember feeling at the time, that Jimmy should have been the last player sold, not the first.
At the time he was Stoke's record signing at £100,000.

Stein by a mile. Losing him and Macari so close to each other was an absolute hammer blow. Then Sharon, Thorns and N'Zonzi. Also Lee Hendrie when we failed to get him back after his loan.

Also Bould as we got fleeced by the transfer tribunal.

Peter Thorne. Without a shadow of doubt. My first City hero. Loved the guy. I started this thread and while Jimmy, for several reasons was my emotional No 1, Thorney was well up there for me too. Not many have bagged 30 goals in a season, he was £300k I think and a bargain from Swindon. A massively hard worker and so brave, I loved him. If only he had tapped in against Liverpool in the game where we lost 8 - 0, as it was 0 - 0 at the time. He came back with Cardiff and scored at hat trick here and didn't celebrate. A true great even if if was in the leagues away from the Prem.

Greenhoff and Hudson. I don't think I will ever get over either of them. It was amazing when Huddy returned from Arsenal, £75k I think, and he was a big part of keeping us in Div 1. I remember him in the game at home to Arsenal, his passes, most just 5/10 yards but with all the guile and deception you could ever see. He was magic.

Stein by a mile. Losing him and Macari so close to each other was an absolute hammer blow. Then Sharon, Thorns and N'Zonzi. Also Lee Hendrie when we failed to get him back after his loan. If I remember correctly they both had their last games away at Wolves? One all draw. Also my first ever away game at eleven years old. I remember they pronounced Steino's name as Stine, apparently at Steino's request! He was claiming we all pronounced his name wrong! Have I imagined this or is it true?! Either way I recall the Stoke fans laughed when the announcer said his name during the line ups because of the pronunciation. I was a kid so I recall it really bothered me that he didn't get a cheer at his last game! Funny how silly things bother you when you're so young. He scored our goal I think. I'll always love Stoke but I'll never be as obsessed as I was at that age, it was the only thing in my carefree life that mattered. I was so gutted when him and Lou left. Biggins too but not on the same level as the Golden One.

Agree fully. The Lou Macari era was amazing. I have just created a new thread about best ever pieces of business by Stoke and the top two are both by Lou, first Steiono for £100k and then swapping Keith Scott for the brilliant Mike Sheron. Just magic.

As with many on here, Greenhoff leaving upset me greatly, I have never got over that sale. Gordon Banks having to retire devastated me. Others leaving that saddened me were as follows, Hudson, Mahoney [ I remember asking him outside the Vic if he was leaving, he said ''I have no choice lad''. Garth Crooks, Adrian Heath, Paul Randall, Big Bren, Mark Chamberlain, Sammy Mac, Peter Beagrie and Mark Stein.

Biggins too but not on the same level as the Golden One. On a side note the Wolves fans were directly above us down the side opposite the main stand/main camera at Molineux. They pelted us with coins all game and I remember witnessing an OAP pissing in a cup and lobbing it down at us. I'd always kind of been in awe of Wolves before that day. We'd just come up from the only league I'd ever really known us in and Central News had hammered it into my young mind that Wolves were a much bigger club than us, plus Molineux was so impressive having being converted to all seater... I've hated them with a passion ever since that game. In fact I would still list them as my most hated team.
