Sheron / Pesch / Stein / Griffin (first time) / Zonz / Kav / Thorne / Begovic.
But also Palacios - just because he was utterly shit the whole time, but I always thought there was a player in there somewhere.

Remember being pissed off as a kid when Neil Adams left. Was really sad when Denis Smith retired as well.

Only Ric leaving has left me properly sad, although I thought it was the right decision, he was majestic. Michael owen replaced him. It was not the right decision, Ric had another year left in him in the prem.

Garth Crooks for me too.Sir Jimmy Greenhoff was a bit before my time but Crooks leaving left me feeling heartbroken as he was my childhood Stoke hero,i was 11 when he left and remember his early days at the club. Also didn't want Lee Chapman to leave as he replaced Crooks as my Stoke hero at the time.

Ric was on his last legs and couldn't produce the magic anymore at the highest level... imo, of course.

Thought for a while that Florent Cuvelier was the one that got away.
Smashed his sinews at Vale Park and unfortunately it seems that that was that.

Mark Stein, John Eustace, Peter Hoekstra, Sergei Shtanuk and Micheal Hansson. I'd had time to get used to Fuller leaving and knew his time was up, through no fault of his own, long before it was. Loved Eustace. Him and Beeston my 2 favourite Stoke midfielders. Both cursed by bastard injuries. What could have been.. .both able to tackle pass and drive forward unlike many limited alternatives.

Didn't he get picked to play for the England B team a couple of days after joining Everton? That didn't do anything to lighten the mood. Dark days with the fans protesting outside the ground chanting "Where's the money gone?"

I knew this thread would stir up some raw emotion. My book, Glory Hunter, to be published this Sumer covers my 5 decade support of SCFC and tracks the heartache of so many departures, Greenhoff at the top of the list and through to Peter Thorne, Steino, Sheron and others. I hope when you read it it won't cause too many painful memories, but without the shit times, the great ones wouldn't feel so good. As they say, the Juice has to be worth the squeeze. Let's give Arsenal hell tomorrow!

Steino and Sheron
You can't put a positive spin on selling an out and out goal scorer
Money is another story but to lose a goal scorer is a massive loss for the players on the pitch and the fans.

It doesn't matter how much the club gets for a star player, it's no consolation to us as fans whatsoever.

An interesting thread!
I agree with many of the posters above and was hugely disappointed when we sold Peter Beagrie, Mike Sharon, Mark Stein, Alan Hudson and Mark Chamberlain, amongst others, including Geoff Salmons!
That said, I don't think any sale has come close to the announcement that we had sold Jimmy Greenhoff; I genuinely couldn't believe it and was devastated for months; especially when he played so magnificently for United, as we all knew he would.
I actually wanted United to succeed, such was my adoration of him and I loved every goal that he scored for them.
I was later at school with his daughter, as I imagine RAF was, and I met him a few times. He was as pleasant a man as I had always assumed him to be.
The day we sold him, it felt like the sky had fallen down or that the footballing world had ended; it wasn't just disappointment, it was beyond comprehension; it was as bad a day in sport as I have ever experienced and one that I hope I never have to experience again.
The man was a genius who never wanted to leave.

Thorne. Even now knowing that he wanted to go doesn't change my mind. He was a hero, and to sell him to Cardiff made me feel sick to my stomach. When he scored that hat trick against us at the brit and didn't celebrate it cemented him as a hero to me.

Greenhoff of course and strangely Andy Griffin when he went to the barcodes,we have lost far better players, but Griff was the one bright light in a sea of dross and to me underlined how desperate those times were.

The man was a genius who never wanted to leave. Spot on. It was a devastating bolt from the blue. It's a different world now where you kind of expect players to move on after a couple of years. But back then, you expected players like Jimmy to stay for their whole careers. From memory (and I was only about 13 at the time) I don't think there'd been any indication that players would have to be sold after the stand blew down. Shortly after, half of that great team had gone, with Hudson, Pejic, Moores, Mahoney, Salmons, Shilton and others being sold on. Bloody awful.
