Its pretty interesting stuff Joe. I cant say I have loads of experience of it from a footballing perspective but I was once an elite swimmer and I know I always hated working for one coach we had who would just bollock you day and night and my numbers showed it.
I wonder what the culture is like in other sports?

I've heard similar over the years. You'd hope at the higher levels it's maybe better, and indeed more civilised at Stoke.
I'll be grabbing the book though, Calvin's are excellent.

How old are they when they first play on full size pitches these days?

How old are they when they first play on full size pitches these days? Far too young. I remember both of mine making the step up from six aside pitches to full sized pitches with full sized goals. Immediately the way they play changes. It quickly becomes kick and rush so a team with a strong lad at the back and a quick lad at the front can dominate games. Add in the fact that the goals are at least two-times too big for a ten year old, and the problems begin. Often the pitches are crap too and it takes some time until any sort of quality returns to games when they are old enough to play on a full sized pitch. I understand the FA has been trying to change this as well as deal with the old problem of idiot parents, including those who referee their own teams in a particular way, but progress seems slow.

My lad plays for DOS37 here in NL. www.dos37.nl is their website They change up to full size pitches when they hit 13 over here, before that they cut the pitch in half so play on half the field with smaller goals. They're currently top of their league I'm their defensive coach ....... I'm brill I am !😄 Seriously though, it is a big step up for them even at this stage, due only to the fact that you're trying to teach them to mark the player AND cover the whole pitch with positionalay as well. Control and pass, and keeping it simple is difficult sometimes as they simply don't have the engine to use the full pitch for 90 minutes Still proud of them though !!!!

Surely playing on full sized pitches at an early age doesn't help development. Emphasis should be on controlling and using the ball in tight areas.
Elsewhere on the board is the thread on Juve and the masterclass. Playing like that takes discipline and thought. And this is where English players are severely lacking...... the capacity to 'think football' and work out how to deal with a problem...including during a game. We love to tell how football is a simple game but sometimes it isn't. In wars of attrition the best thinkers often prevail.

Another viewpoint is that all this wrapping in cotton wool and living in a bubble of constant praise leads to much of the twatishness that afflicts the modern baller,
