Championship leaders Reading today won the race for City defender John Halls when they signed him for a six-figure fee.
Halls completed his move to the Madejski Stadium after agreeing personal terms.
The fee is £250,000, plus a further £50,000 if Reading are promoted to the Premiership. City will also be entitled to 20 per cent of any future sell-on.
Reading pipped Southampton, who also had talks with the former Arsenal trainee who joined the Potters on a free transfer in December 2003 after two months on loan and made 72 league and cup appearances.
Says City's Director of Football John Rudge: "We are disappointed to lose John because our first intention was to keep him here.
"But he had made it quite plain he wanted to leave and he would not be signing a new contract when his present one expired next summer.
"That meant he could have left on a free transfer, so clearly it was better to do business now and we have done the best we can.
"In the circumstances, the Board accepted the offer and the structure of the deal and the sell-on clause maintains out interest should he progress further."
