Agreed it's far better than paying his wages between now and the end of the season and then letting him go for nowt, at least from what is written in the Sentinel ::)we have insisted on a sell on clause which of course we couldn't do if he went on a Bosman.

Reading Off Site says he's signed until 2008.
...........for £250,000 ;D
------------------------------------ Reading Football Club have agreed to sign John Halls for £250,000 from Stoke City. The 23 year-old will sign a two and a half year contract until the summer of 2008.
Halls began his career as a trainee at Arsenal, playing alongside current Reading players James Harper, Steve Sidwell and Graham Stack, and made three first team appearances for the Gunners before joining Stoke in October 2003.
Director of Football Nick Hammond said, "John will be a very good addition to our squad. He is first and foremost a right back, but he's a very versatile player and can also play in the centre of defence or midfield.
"He was brought up with Arsenal so he had an excellent education as a player, and that formula has been successful for us in the past. John is also at a good age, and he has an exciting future ahead of him."
Chairman John Madejski added, "John Halls is a very talented footballer and I am very pleased to welcome him to Reading Football Club. I am delighted that we have held off the competition for his signature and confident that he will become an important member of our squad."
Halls is currently recovering from a hamstring injury and will not be available for Friday night's game at Crystal Palace.
John will be introduced to the media at the training ground this lunchtime, and we will have more here at readingfc.co.uk soon.

I reckon that is good business all things considered, is there a sell on clause mentioned?
Edit - doesn't look like it, perhaps that's why the fee is £250k?

That's a fantastic deal.
I thought we'd be looking at about £100k.
I'm amazed Reading have paid that much in the circumstances.

I reckon it's more than anyone of us could have hoped for, lets hope it gets spent on a replacement and a left back

I think they have 20% ID but I'm not sure if that's 20% of any profit which wouldn't be much really

The 50,000 WHEN it is paid would pay off Arsenal's 20%. Wonder if it was negotiated with that in mind because it's nailed on Reading will go up isn't it? Or could it be that they have just matched the agreed fee with Southampton................who look far less certain to go up
