In his time here I'm not sure that Hughes has ever looked at a Glenn Whelan type as a replacement for GW. To me at least he's attempting to do away with a scrappy sitter, not part of his philosophy, even to the extent of obviously getting Glenn to be more expansive and break out of the cage. Rightly or wrongly I think Hughes & co's idea of what he expects from a dm is different to most on here. Sidwell, Van Ginkel, Allen etc. We havn't sold Bojycakes yet, 'lucky' he bought Allen in as it happens, we'd be far worse off goals and points and places without him. Shame you've given up on Imbula after 12 months and fail to recognise his undoubted qualities, which still amounts to massive potential imo. I agree to an extent regarding full backs/wing backs, it's a niggle I'm prepared to be patient with, getting the right upgrades on Pieters, Johnson, Bardsley, Muniesa is no mean feat, and who knows which targets we couldn't land, or whether there's identified pathways from the Academy. There afre niggles, things that could be better, it'll always be the case, football: passion and opinion. Mainly gravy for me. I've not given up on Imbula, I'm wanting him played as a no.10 but Hughes seems to think he's made a big mistake with him. That's what I was more concerned about. Not sure about Hughes thinking he's made 'a big mistake' with him. But I'm pretty sure from what I've seen Imbula's not a no10 {not in the way I understand it anyway.} A midfield three {in the right games} of Allen, Afellay and Imbula would be pretty funky imo.

A few observations on the posts above;
I have noticed how often Whelan gets forward, and it is wrong to presume he always just sits in front of the back 4.
What should Stoke's position be? I don't know, but I do know that consistently achieving 9th is punching well above our weight; long may it continue.
Projects take a long time. Very true; in the case of a construction project, it is reasonable to expect steady progress towards completion, but in the case of a human project, the ride is going to be a lot bumpier with setbacks along the way.
"7th is impossible." No it's not ask Leicester; it's just highly unlikely, but a realistic goal to aim for. Everton winning today makes it a very long stretch this season as they have quite a few winnable home games to achieve the points to put them beyond our reach.
We have a poor academy. Well it would appear so, but we have joined the party late and others have reputations that is going to put them top of the list as preferred places to be. We just have to keep working at the project and employ the best coaches we can procure. Success will breed success, and a consistent 9th place in the Prem will make us a more attractive proposition than a "yo-yo" club.
"not sure that Hughes has ever looked at a Glenn Whelan type as a replacement for GW" - didn't PC say some time ago that the club was?
"QPR debacle" MH has said he could have turned things round. His record is quite clear, he has finished in the top half of the Prem with every club he has managed for a full season. He went to QPR and saved them from relegation. Things went pear-shaped (I understand) because a load of new players were brought in to improve the squad on very lucrative contracts, and the players who had "saved" the club the previous season not given anything. The dressing room was divided. QPR was bottom after 12 matches when MH was sacked, which gave Harry plenty of time to turn it round, he couldn't. We are used to slow starts with MH at Stoke aren't we?
There have been bad signings and good. I would venture to say there have been more good than bad, it's just that the weight of expectation on those that have been expensive and disappointed blots the copy book far worse. Grant, Indi (loan), Allen, Arni, Bojan for a while, and now Sobhi have been great. Pieters, Bardsley, and Johnson have been excellent value for money. There are bound to be a few "duffers" along the way.

Be interested to know what Coates said, but doubt it shines any light on what Hughes may be looking for really. To me the idea that Hughes wants the centre backs to play it out etc diminishes that need for a 'Pulis Whelan type' trad. sitter. I think your first comment adds validity to me point Mr.C. Not sure it's fair to say our Academy is poor. Havn't we got 5stars or something for the facilities and obvious signs of continuing investment and improvement {and match squad opportunities] at all levels.

I can't remember what PC said as it was 1-2 years ago but there was a clear inference to "upgrade" on Whelan. I wasn't criticising the academy facilities, more, concurring with others, the lack of end product - yet; maybe I was unfair.

Hopefully today also backs my point up more about full-backs.

I'm candidly amazed at the glorious failure themes today and the outrage at Costa , for me today was simply a microcosim of all our issues as we had a total balls of the chance to play Chelsea without their best player .
1 The manager has spent circa £70m and now goes back to 442 and a running game a complete lack of a real plan , Walters is now our man in the hole , it's taken 3 years to find his best position and in that time he's past his best . Not a shot from open play by my recollection .
2 Bony , Shaq , imbula , Joselu , bojan , all not good emough to make the match day squad so passing goes out the window as we revert to Pulis Style and Pulis players .
3 Bowen successfully applies for the biggest Welsh dipstick award since max boyce by suggesting the answer with Shaq is to leave him out but get him to play 90 minutes on Wednesday for Switzerland .
4 our lack of fitness brutally exposed again second half as we fall away .
5 our new forward shows he's not remotely ready and probably never will be certainly adding nothing Bony or Diouf couldn't Have
6 our Hollywood keeper throws 2 more points away , wba , Chelsea , Man Utd , Leicester all gifted goals by failure to do the basics , exactly why he was where we found him
7 our subs diabolical as Pieters is left on to concede the game while patently obvious to the entire stadium he should have been off 10 minutes previously .
glorious failure my arse , a missed opportunity but par for the course for a 42 point team .and for fuck sake stop of Moaning go about refs and Chelsea Costa just pissed all over us and we need to accept it . I remain comvinced we are in material regression and circa 42 points , it's probably enough but we are currently totally lost in terms of direction

Catastrophically wasted in the transfer strategy by a clueless transfer team , doesn't stop me going or make me a traitor
